Painting over chrome?
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:41:55 AM »

Hey guys, hoping I can get a couple pointers here. I'm going to be painting a grille I have for my ramcharger before it goes on the truck, it's a 79 quad headlight grille and I'd like to paint it gloss black with the "grates" of the grille red, I'm just not sure if it's a simple scuff and shoot job or if I have to do any special primer, etc. It's just my winter driver truck so it doesn't have to be pretty but I want it to last.

That's not chrome, it's more likely anodized aluminum. Might be mostly worn off by now.

 agree
Anything to give it "teeth" zinc chromate primer ( The green stuff , C-Tire has it )   , then shoot it with color.

A good scuffing with some 320 should give it enough teeth to bond the primer

Yeah I was just going to take a scotchbrite pad to it first and then paint it but maybe I'll need that zinc primer?
