It must have been a coil spring rearend.Every Chevelle I ever owned had tire hop without putting a latter bar set up on it.65-69 big block 4-speed cars.I can over power my mopars and not get into tire shake because of the power the 1 time I had tire shake on the race car was because of to low of tire preasure and I turned the tire over on it's self.
I think what you seen or saw was tire hop which chevelle's have and nova's are alot more forgiving due to the leaf spings.
My wife's SRT-4 ACR has terrible tire hop off the line before we put solid motor mounts in it.
When I had tire shake in the race car I hurt from the bottom of my back to my head for a week.

as far as the car and coil springs ,, it 87 Trans-m steel body ,lexan windows ,glass hood oem front frame section , 2x3 rear, 4 link ,koni' front and back, 540, 14-71 , with a Bruno box coan convertor with a 3 spd Lenco , the gears i beleive are 373 with 15 x 31 slick , and the part that i didnt like , the owner/driver is convinced that 13 pds of air in the tires is perfect , he has bracket raced for ever he's 60 plus and yesterday was the first time out , it was a argument just to get him to shut off some of the electrical toys and make it go down the track , i am not looking for right or wrong answers , just food for thought , i really wish i would have taken a picture of the rear tires the side wall had physical signs of abuse inside of the tire and outsiide

ok..explain this since you are talking tire shake.. Friend of mine runs a Top comp dragster..somewhere around the 7.60 et mark. One race that we help with the car....she had tire shake. First thing I thought of was increase tire pressure but when she had talked to a number of her buddy racers...they told her to drop the pressure a little. From what they said...the tire was not biting enough....We dropped the pressure just a bit and the tire shake went away...

well i was at the same place, put a little air in the tires , if i would have been smarter i would have taken some pics but in trying to sort out some other things i didnt get it done , will try to explain , looking at the tire from the side, the tires inner and outer side walls had marks the full circumference , they were pie shaped the point being at the rim and wide at the the outer limit of the sidewall ,about 3 inches or so at the wide end , also there was a black ring around the tire 2 inches wide at the outer edge of the side wall where it meets the tread face , when you rub your hand on the sidewall anywhere these black marks were felt very ruff like you hit it with flapper wheel or wire wheel , when the car left the lights he left off the brake at 5000 the tires ,looking from the rear were, width wise, narrow wide narrow wide , almost like they were trying to grow but not ,at first i thought oops did i tighten them or not, the car was in the air on the front, a couple of feet being conservative, when we got to the pits , driver was a little sore bit his tongue , it looked like the rim may have hit the pavement they looked a little scuffed ,but cant say as i noticed the marks before on them. last year with the 500cu. and the 10-71 it worked jim dandy . Come to think of it the wheels on the wheelie bars , the pattern was also wide and narrow , hmmm , now i feel stupid you dont suppose the wheelie bars are unloading the rear end and the black ring is the rim, that would just p me right off
