so how many of you have this piece of chrome on your car that is in the middle of the grill and kind of comes to a point on a 68 grill?

I've only seen it on Jim Lusk's GTS Convt. It's kinda cool looking, IMHO

They were supposed to be GTS-only and some evidence points to early 68s only. Mine has an SPD of 8/28/67, but the grille and all front end sheetmetal was replaced in 1970.

How early? I have heard the theory that it was the end of August 1967. It's not on the broadcast sheet, either. It was part of the GTS package at that time.

my car has it. ive seen it in the big green chiltons manuals and on a few non local darts. but as for its originality on my car i cannot say. shes a dirty one and has been around the block a couple of times. but when i got the car the grille and bolts pretty much looked untouched. now do they black out the grille under it?

the engine says 8-19-67 on it
The SPD is on the fender tag, bottom row. With a late August engine it is likely the SPD is in September.

The SPD is first three numbers under SHIPPING ORDER. They are separate from the actual SO number.

That makes it a March 21, 1968 SPD which is not an early car. You also may not have the original engine with that much difference between SPD and casting date. Is there anything stamped into the top of the bellhousing area on the block?

At some point in the 68 model year they started stamping the partial VIN on the blocks and transmissions where they attach. I've never looked at my trans and I know the original 340 has been gone since around 1980, replaced first with a 73 short block and later with the 70 block that's in it now.

I don't know if it help but theres a local (somewhat) GT convert that shows up at like one or two shows a year and it has one. Its not a GTS but is suposedly 100% all original untouched car- its got a butt-load of paper work with it at all the shows- maybe the next show I'll try to find the owner and ask em about it.

Unless it's a one-owner deal you'll never know for sure. I also figure that it is possible that a few cars got away with one that weren't supposed to.

changes the look of the grill with it

I don't remember as it's been a long time since my grille was out and mine was replaced in 1970 so it's not necessarily as the factory did it.
