I have a chance to buy some fresh 340 X heads. Can throw these right onto my 273 without problems?

I haven't ever tried it, but I've heard that the valve are to big and will hit. I would think some nice 302 casting 318 heads would be a good choice with some 360 valves.

No they won't fit without notching the cylinder walls.

The big chambers would also kill your compression.

I used a set on my turboed 273...yes you do have to notch/cut a small radius around the intake valve. Just do not go lower than where the highest point of your top piston ring will be on TDC. It was a good way for me to lower my static compression.
