Rear end 9.25?
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:34:16 AM »

I have been looking for an 8.75 rear for my Duster with 520hp small block and 727 auto.  So far I haven't found any 8.75 housing at A body length or 8.75 any length with posi to shorten.  Lots of cases locally with 741 and some 742 carriers but nothing with posi.   However I aquired a 77 Plymouth Fury Hiway Patrol car with 400 BB engine that has a 9.25 rear with suregrip 3.23 ratio.  Question is the 9.25 as strong as the 8.75 and is it worth shortening for the Duster?  Can the 9.25 axles be shortened?  Appreciate opinions.  At this time I would rather not buy new gears and new posi unit both.

9 1/4 in a car? I've personally never heard of it but I guess it's possible. Personally I would keep looking for a 8 3/4. their very common in C-body's and 70's 2wd pickups. 91/4's have a weak point where the axle tubes taper down at the brake backing plates.

Well, I am not to clear on the 'dont's' of running a 9.25, but you would likely be the first one here that has done so...

You will eventually run into an 8 3/4. There are 3 old trucks sitting in the junkyard 20 minutes from my house with them just sitting there for $200 a pop complete from drum to drum. They aren't extinct by any means.

I will keep looking for 8.75 too, but thanks for info.  I'll check with Moser to see if there are new axles available for the 9.25.  Thanks
