I wonder if any of you guys can help, I've used high volume Melling pumps for years and I've never had a problem, they've always done a great job.
Anyway, I'm just about to buy a new one for my stroker motor and heard a whisper that Melling production has now been moved out of the United States and quality is nowhere near as good. I don't want to bash what has alway been a great product, that's not my style but can anyone throw any light on this?
I don't want to risk wrecking my new motor.

i am not one that likes to pay good money for a NEW part, just to have to take it apart, inspect it, sand or grind on it,and put it back together, but with quality control and inspection, or lack of inspection, some times this is what you have to do to KNOW that your new part is good. most engine builders always take them apart before they put them on. i have a new demon carb. still in the bag, from what i have read on here i all almost afraid to just put on before i take it apart. what a shame!!...good luck

Ive run the Melling pumps, and they are good, But I would look at it. My last one had casting flash that restricted the inlet hole. Andyf had pics of a pump that caused a 383/431 stroker to shell in a "Mopar Muscle" test article. Same situation. It worked untill the rpm was at over 6000, then it spun a rod brg and took out a good bottom end. I took mine apart and massaged the passage with a carbide cutter On the other end though. I have another friend who had the indy oil pump and it had too tight of end play. Seized and he caught it just before it took out an Indy Maxx blk. 540. You just have to look at that stuff. Rick

Twenty three years ago, I worked in a shop that built marine engines. Whether we were doing a 260 horse small block chevy or a 540" big block, the oil pump got inspected.

Thanks guys, I'll buy a Melling pump, strip it and blueprint it...like the Demon carbs, seems you can't risk just bolting these things on any more.

It doesn't matter much which iron high volume pump you buy, they most likely all carry the HV63 tag under one cover bolt = reboxed mellings with a "new" price.

I have a brand new in the box pump I bought a long time ago (before I started with houses and kids) from Dick Landy. It's in a Milodon box, ported by Landy. I'm going to check it when I get home... I bet anything it's made by Mellings.

I'm sure I read on one of the other boards that there are only 2 maufacturers of stock style oil pumps, the largest was Melling, so that's probably what you are getting no matter what it says on the box. It's a similar situation with Lifters.

I just put a new oil pump in the 340, I ended up with 3 Mellings that all had the old round type vanes, and 1, Sealed Power4166V, that has the new squared vane with larger pockets, I kept this one, and returned the Mellings. I did not like the differences between the Mellings, dirt, rust, smaller output hole, bypass valves that all set differently. Also I had to hammer the oil pan to clear the new pump.(Millodon low 7qt.). 80+lbs @ 2000 rpm. It's a good one! Pep Boy's matched AutoZones price of $35, because the part #'s are the same on the box.
