Two water pumps shot in 2 weeks.
« on: June 25, 2008, 07:32:38 PM »

Maybe this is just my luck but I had a milidon aluminum pump seize up on me last week, Car started to overheat,It was on the car for  maybe a year and a half,so I put the original cast iron one back on only drove maybe 50 miles so far it sounds like a sraypaint can rattling at idle?Although the temp. is holding at 190 I think its ready to go.Time for another one I guess what do you guys like cast iron or aluminum ???Thanks-Gene.

The reason the iron one sounds like that is because it was used and then sat out and the bearings rusted.  I have no idea why the Milodon siezed up.  I'm going to get the 440 source aluminum one for my next build.

So I put in a brand new water pump(got one made by jegs)next day start it up no leaks, holds temp.but still got that rattling.so I narrow it down to the crankshaft pulley, the bolts were loose and I could wiggle it by hand.I tightned the bolts only to get a worse metal on metal noise. After taking it off,I ran the motor withoput the pully,no noise, put the pulley back on nasty noise,Is the pulley bent or out of round? it looks fine by eye,the bolts are not sticking through the back of the balancer I thought that might be the rubbing noise? Only thing I can think of is that it got bent or out of round somehow maybe by overtightning the fan belt?Defintly not gonna drive it like that.Gene.

Take the pulley and bolt it to something that you you turn. The put a dial indicator on the edge and turn it slowly, watch the indicator. You should see some run out if its bent. Make something like a bicycle wheel would be, only with the pulley. Then you can indicate it.

A long shot here, are the pulley bolts too long letting it hit the front cover causing the grinding noise?

Ahha, you got it right ,what a pain in the ass this was,3 of the bolts were grindind the timing cover,I don't know why after years with no problem? put in shorter bolts,no problem except I think I put in a new water pump for no reason.

The bolts that hold the pulley on through the harmonic damper ,3 of them were just rubbing the cover.

Oh. Ok. I couldn't imagine how anything on the water pump was touching the timing cover.
