Topic: To cut or not to cut? (Read 230 times)

So I finally got the remainder of my dash apart other then a few switches(headlight switch, ignition switch one of the toggle switches) and the speaker which I'll get out on the weekend. I'm just wondering what would be the best option for me to do. the floor pans have holes on both outer front floor pans. So I was thinking maybe I should just cut out the areas that I will be repairing with 18 guage steel. Just cut out the area from the front seam to the metal just in front of the seat mount holes, but leaving the transmission tunnel. I'm going to be replacing the front inner fenders and the rad support so I figure maybe cutting them out before getting the car blasted is the best option for me. Does that sound like a good plan?

If it were me, I would get the car blasted first, then you'll see the pinholes that you can't now. Once you get that done, I would get replacement front floor pans, cut and fit them and weld 'em in. Repro stampings will still need a little tweaking to get them to fit, but not too bad. If you use flat sheet, it will oil-can on you and won't feel solid, plus it looks like a patch. On a beater car, I'll use some sheetmetal and bend up some patches, but not on my "good" car. Oh, and absolutely keep the trans tunnel. They don't rust, and you really need some "known" locations. Plus, it'll help keep the car from folding up like a taco.
