Started work on the 512
« on: June 28, 2008, 07:33:48 PM »

Got the block back from the machine shop last week. Installed the crank, rods, and pistons to measure how for down they were. The left bank went from .007 down to .020 and the right was pretty level at .017. Discovered that spirolocks are a big pain in the ass! Had the block decked and the heads milled to get my compression as close to 10-1 as possible. Got a few pics of the shiny new block and me filing the rings to fit.

Also got the cam ordered. Went with a Hughes solid. The specs are 252/256 @.050 with a .572/.579 lift using 1.5 rockers.

that means the block was not decked squarely.   he sent it back to the machine shop and had both sides decked till they were level and matched side to side

The #1 piston was .007 down in the hole, #3 was .015, #5 was .017 and #7 was .020 down.

No, they decked it so it squared up at .002 down, from .005 on one end to .018 on the other.

so that means the compression distance is'nt the same or the connecting rods aren't either.  The crank could be off also.  Have it redecked and check again.

Steve, I haven't rechecked it after having it decked. The measurements were prior to decking.

My 400 block was far out when I built my 511. The machine shop thought I was on crack when I gave them the numbers from my test fit. Mine was horrible. When they squared it I had my pistons +.023 outof the hole. They went from zero deck to .020 out. When I got my diamond pistons for the b1 heads I spec'd a .025 less pin height.

The cam would not go in this block either. They had to make a cutter from an old cam I had.

What do you mean the cam didn't go in? Was there excessive core shift?

Any time I ever had a friend call and say he couldn't get a cam in or it wouldn't turn after it was in, I'd come over, we'd install a new set of cam bearings ourselves and there was never another problem.
I personally have never had a block that needed anything other than the bearings installed properly.

I had a block before that was .037 off from front to back of the bank.  Take your time and measure everything twice.  If it's not right, have it corrected.  Good Luck and let us know,  Steve
