Moving battery to trunk
« on: June 30, 2008, 10:46:37 PM »

When moving the battery to the trunk how do you guys wire it up? Is there 2 wires coming from the battery (one to starter and one
to selinod) or just one wire to starter?

Wiring is not my favorite job, Any pics will help.

Thanks Mike

Just the main cable everything else bootlegs off that. That way you kill everything with a disconnect.

Wasn't planning on running a disconnect, Will that make a diference?

Thanks

Also, How are you guys doing the ground? Ony to frame or all the way back to the motor? My motor is grounded
with the stock strap?

Thanks

I run a ground to the frame.  I also have a solid ground from engine to frame.

rules where I race require an external cut off when a battery is relocated.  I prefer having one myself.  it cuts off from the outside, but you have to open the trunk to turn it on.  keeps someone from being able to come by and just switch it on.  the cutoff kills both the + side of the battery and the alternator wire.

the + side connects to the same place it did before I moved the battery.

I'd say run a shutoff, you'll need it if you plan on doing anything with the car, like running it at a track.  ground it to the frame,  and we just ran one wire to the solenoid, and branched off from there.

Stock set up has one wire to the starter and one wire to the solenoid. To get this straight I'm running a mini starter I should run
hot wire to the solenoid only and jump it over to the starter.

Thanks

Just remove your old positive battery cable and replace it with the new one coming from the trunk. Everything else stays the same.

You will need a cutoff, and probably sealed batt box or trunk. The track I ran at could care less about anything, but requires those with relocated batteries.

Maynard,

I'm running a single wire alternator, does that change anything?

Did I mention I hate wiring.

Thanks

Anyone , Please correct me if I am wrong !!! Believe me, I don't know anything about wiring. But , In the picture I believe the main power cable to the starter is always hot. That could be trouble down the road. My expierience has taught me that " Shit Happens " If you had a remote starter seloniod near the battery and ran a 8 guage wire to the starter seloniod it would only be hot when you are cranking it. Correct me if I am wrong !!!   Jack

Hello:
Well that makes at least 3 of us that are not experts, and I hate wiring also.  I use this system and have had no problem with it..before I went to this my driver emergency kill switch and one wire alternator would run on when I shut it off.

    any feedback experts?

My stock set up had a hot wire running to the starter and a smaller wire running to the starter
solenoid, Not much diferent from this set up above. I completed wiring yesterday, tested lights
and turn signals (cut harness and routed outside inner fender). So far so good.
Engine bay looks clean.

Hope to try to start up today. Waiting on parts to complete my  nitrous set up.  Grin Grin Grin

I am IN THE PROCESS of doing my wiring right now. I plan on going, BAT+ to kill switch to a ford solenoid to the starter( mini starter) I jumpered the wire from the start relay to the big post on the starter motor. From the "S" terminal on the solenoid I have my ignition switch (push button). I will see what happens and let ya'll know......

Good luck on that. Like I said before I don't know much about wiring , but if I read right, I am wondering about the jumpered the wire from the start relay to the big post on the starter motor. I hope it works for you !!!

On the thread "Another dumb wiring question" It was suggested to bridge the trigger terminal to the main lug on the starter, then run a 1 gauge wire from the main lug up to the post on the Ford Solenoid. Its been done by many folks on this board that went a different route than the factory wiring, which keeps a constant "HOT" on the starter main lug. So, far the wiring is going really good. I will get pics up when I am done.

Any pics on this settup? I am planning on doing the same thing with a Ford solenoid. I am running a + cable from the trunk and going to the solenoid, off ov the battery side of the solenoid, I will run my power to the rest of the car, and off of the switched side, run a #4 wire to the starter and jumper from the main lug to the small lug on the starter. Now, the wire that used to run to the solenoid from the Mopar starter relay goes to the Ford solenoid and connects WHERE? , S or I terminal? I believe it is the S. Anybody know? Whew Dunno Thanks

The pull in wire from your starter goes to the S terminal on the Ford solenoid.   Jump the starter pull in terminal to the cable lug and when the Ford solenoid closes, the starter solenoid sees full battery voltage.  The car will start like never before.

One really nice thing about this mod is that the section of cable going to the starter is dead all the time.  It's only hot during cranking, a big plus in my book when you have headers.

Here's a trunk battery with "dead" starter wire diagram from M.A.D., a great source for electrical stuff...

And here's a link to my post on Moparts about some other A-body wiring updates I'm (attempting) to make on the Barracuda...
