well she is running.....
« on: July 02, 2008, 09:40:00 PM »

damn thing kicked my ass but its running.  timing curve is a bit much for the stock motor...lol    gonna pulle the dist. and put a different bushing in it to make it a longer curve,     got initial set at 10*.  anyone know what a stock 74  360 should be set out?

boy does it sound mellow..  sounded meaner with the 318 that was in it 12 years ago..lol.   drove it up and down the driveway some. idles at like 500 rpm in gear. smooth as hell. can't even feel it running now.  the power steering system seems to still have a ton of air in it. guess that will work out right?

Yeah, the P/S should quiet down a bit after turning stop to stop quite a few times and sitting for a while to get the foaming to settle.

I was told to run 30 deg total timing in my cast crank 78 360 unless I run race gas, then I can go silly with the timing, but I have'nt fired it up yet.

You got a Holley 4bbl (3310 w/ sec metering block?) and headers. Guess what? It ain't "stock" no more. As far as timing goes, crank it up till it talks to ya, then back it down a hair. If I had to guess at it, I'd say the 'ol rule of thumb applies. 34*-36* all in by 2500 RPM. If it's not pinging, try giving it a little more. If it does, pull some out.

What kind of curve do you have now?

in the other 360 it idled about 20* and total was 35*  i think i'll just widen the curve  so it will idle at 10-15* i guess and total at 35* and see what happens.  luckily its a msd dist so its just a matter of changing the bushing if i can remember where i put them..lol.

lo..  its over carbed and over exhausted...    3" pipes on it..  poor engine has no idea what its in for.  god knows what the compression is. probably about 8to1.  maybe i can run regular in it..Smiley

I'm sure you can (and probably should) run regular and what did that poor defenseless 360 ever do to you to deserve what you are about to put it through?
Be kind to it. It has to last untill your "real" motor's done

lol..  as soon as the 2.94 gears go in  it should be ok.  but as long as the 3.91's are in it it will be tempting to hammer it...

lol bash It is WIERD to hear such a pretty little motor with hot looking headers, 4-barrel, and fancy aluminum radiator idle so SMOOTHLY! Especially in a car that's all over Youtube roasting the rear tires every chance it gets!  lol bash

You do some clean work though with that car. Looks great! and sounds great too!

I'm doing basically the same thing with a 318 that I've got.  But I'm still waiting on the 408 kit.  My 318 should be back together this weekend.  I got half the pistons and the crank in tonight.  That 360 looks really good.  It's definately too quiet, but at least it's running and you can enjoy it for the rest of the summer.

It's sure a clean and good looking engine for a "temporary" engine.  Very nice.

Abody, you should put some kind of rubber isolator between the rad and the core support.  If you don't, something will crack (probably the radiator).  Motor sounds good.

no i have a stock converter in it for now.  the dynamic will go back to get tightened up for the 408 when i decide exactly what that combo ends up being.
