It just uses brickette's . There is no adjustment for heat but you can use the cooler end as a warmer and cook on the hot end . I have cooked a  chunk of salmon, a Large burger and a nice steak on it so far. But one at at time. I was thinking about getting some 413 badging for it  LOL   This is a weiner roaster I was going to make for it.

Older ones are definitely steel.   A nice 16V-149 would yield a nice sized barbecue.
 My father and I built one out of a 275 home heating oil tank on it's side. We used it for pig roasts.  Cooked real nice.
