Topic: Running brake lines inside car? (Read 560 times)

I've seen 2-3 custom builds now where the brake lines were run INSIDE the car using some bulkhead connectors where going through the sheet metal. I'm thinking of doing this with my build for a couple of reasons.
Does anyone know of any important reasons why to NOT run them through the inside? Would appreciate any ideas and feedback...

The only things I can think of are, more connections to potentially leak, the mess inside the car if something did leak, and the difficulty of accessing pipes once the interior is all in. Other than that it sounds fine, I would imagine off road racers and rally cars do it like that to avoid the pipes getting damaged.

I have seen some newer import cars running the brake lines thru the inside.

Plus the added adventure of them rubbing against more things and causing leaks or failure(s). There's alot more stuff on the inside to run into or into the lines. It can be done, you'll just need to be aware of any possible contact with bad stuff. Most hose/fitting/line shops, that make their own stuff from scratch, carry some type of protective covering to prevent this. But like all cool stuff it costs more than just plain, uncovered, line.

Hi John,
No new pictures as of yet. I've done quite a bit since my last pics, but my camera went bad. Bought a new one but haven't learned how to use it yet. Taking several days off this week to make progress. Will learn my camera and take / post some progress shots. You must be having a ball with your convert these days, huh?

Plenty of good reasons to run the lines inside the car. Other than keeping the car original, I don't know of a reason not to except that it will cost a little more money. We did the Demon like this and it works very well. It makes things much cleaner under the hood and under the car. The lines can be ran more direct, easier and safer to get the right front plumbed without having to run it across the K frame. Don't have to worry about the exhaust or pinching a line with a floor jack. Keep the line lock under the dash, that's one less wire through the firewall. It's a no brainer IMO.

I have not run my brake lines yet. I like this idea. Did you guys use bulkhead fittings or drill and rubber grommet???

We use bulkheads with AN/nut and sleeve type hardware. I wouldn't attempt it drilling holes and passing lines through the panels. Costs a little more but the results are worth it. Ford did it back in the 80s.The rears were run by the back seat.They did rust out as it was a catch basin for water in the weather.On a car that sees little weather they should last a long time.Rocky

We hauled the Demon to Carlisle this afternoon where it will be on display at the Keisler booth in front of the grandstand. The car is not quite finished yet, so don't bust our chops too hard if it's a little rough around the edges.

post some pics of the Demon at ride height?? I am curious what kind of clearance you have. what size front tire did you ultimately go with??

Just remembered to look today. 245-35x18. There may be some ride height pics on the web site, I'd have to look. We've been working on the car so I'm sure there'll be some more photos taken soon.
