a neighbor got me started with the fresh veggies out of his garden. so now i'm gonna start a small garden, it was that good! gonna start now, so by feb. it might be ready . plus, my yard is all rock & clay. also, it's 112 degrees out there, no need to rush into any thing right away . any body familiar / composting? got a shipping box, real sturdy osb, 1&1/2 ft wide, 3&1/2 ft long, 17inches deep, probably treated, i put 14, 2" holes in it for air, screened over them, & gonna tarp over the rest. overkill? momma doesn't think this is not gonna stink, what i've researched so far, if it sinks, something is out of balance, ph, or something in the mixture. any comments, suggestions, are welcome. thanks in advance.

Oh man theres nothing like fresh vegies. Chicken,bunny,cow...shit, nothing fertilizes better than manuer! If your ground sucks try making raised beds, a couple 2x12s to make a square frame and fill with your compost and manuer. Easy to harvest to when beds are raised...good luck with your green thumb...call me when its dry enough to smoke! YEEHAAA!

A New Journey Begins.....

Here's my idea of a low maintenance garden...I had some tomato plants in containers and Randy said they needed to be in the ground, so a couple of weeks ago we found a used Rear tine roto tiller and started to figure out where to put a garden...I don't like pulling weeds all summer so I just tilled a few rows in the yard leaving a row of sod between rows so I can walk in there and just weed the rows and not get full of mud. Here's a picture, the only problem I'm having is something ate my beets swischard, and some of my sunflowers already....I went out and bought some more pepper plants yesterday to put in their place... Also, a lady at the plant stand was using Epsom Salt on all her plants, she said use it once a month and your plants will thrive...I used it, and she was right, I saw a big increase in the healthiness of the plants, it's a good fertilizer. Cost of Rototiller $225.00, cost of plants and seeds...about $20.00...playing in the dirt and seeing your own veggies grow....Priceless My beans squash and cucumbers are gonna grow up the trellis...I hope...

Picture of my pepper plants have to chicken wire these are the rabbits will eat all the leafs, thay dont bother tomatos...but the freakin squirls will pick a tomato take one bite and leave it on the ground...freakin tree rats!

My garden was looking great until Raven found it. Now I'm missing some veggies. I only started a little one. Your's looks great PinkE. I made the front of the house look nice with perennials and put some tomatoes that I grew from seed, so I'm gonna go buy some plants because they probably are only a couple of inches tall, and I also started peppers, zucchini, egg plant and the foot long string beans and I don't remember everything but I think I'm missing egg plant and zucchini now. Raven digs craters in the back yard and we just had some dirt delivered and she dug them again!

I live in Indiana near Indianapolis, I have 2 kinds of tomato plants, Cherry and Early girl, and some Jalopeno peppers, Bell peppers, Pole green beans, cucumbers, Zuccini, 2 cabbage plants, cilantro, whats left of the beets and swisschard..(I just told Randy the racoon ate my veggies, he said he'll shoot it when he gets home ) I think maybe it was one of the squirrels that did it, or the deer we've seen walking around the back yard... We also have 2 apple trees, 2 peach trees and a cherry tree, you can see them in the background...if those squirells get my peaches, there gonna get this too....the birds got the cherries... ...

Sounds like you live in heaven PinkE. My friend used to compost but she used one of those big rusty looking drums and had holes drilled into the sides. She put it as far back in the yard as she could. She dumped all of the scraps from veggie foods only in it, and she used a pitch fork to turn it. I personally thought she was nuts but she did have a kick ass garden. She put a screen over it too so the animals didn't drag everything out.

Hey Danger Dawg I live in Glendale Az and have had a raised bed garden for 5 years. I got a mixed load of dirt compost and manure from Pioneer Sand to get it started. My son and I expanded it this year to 16' x 15' and we ran pvc lines to water the rows before we filled it with dirt. We have grown tomatoes, chillies (all kinds), Pumpkin, carrot, onion, watermelon.melons, and clinatrio chives, corn, etc. grow some of the herbs helps keep some of the bugs away, I do not remember which is good for what but you can look it up on line. We had tomatoe worms last year on the grapevine but none this year.

i playing with a garden this year again. it seems to be doing ok, i have some strawberries, corn, 4 different tomatos, a few different peppers, watermelon, cucumber, the pumpkin plants are taking over though. i took them and zip tied them to the chiken wire around the garden. last time i did a garde we had so many roma tomatos, my dogs would pic them when green, chew them up and spit them out in the driveway. we still managed to get hundreds of tomatos.

I used to always plant a garden. Grew, (or tried to grow just about everything) But the last couple years have been drought followed by floods, followed by drought.. I got tired and now the neighbors grow a great garden, and love to share!! Maybe when I'm retired like them, I can get back into it. But you all have inspired me.... maybe....
