Just pulled a balancer bolt out of a crank snout and it looks like the bolt galled the threads on the way out. No way this bolt went in how it looks.

I know. I've heard of it happening with aluminum, but not iron/steel. The only other thing I can figure is there was something in the snout when they installed the balancer and it picked it up on the way in and rolled it into the threads. The threads are good enough for the bolt to get started again and I can see good threads about halfway in, so I hope I can clean it up with a tap and be good to go.

if it's a "B" motor i suggest using the longer sm blk damper bolt, it's about 3/4" longer.

Yeah, chase the threads in the snout, get a new bolt and like bob said, use a small block bolt.
I like a LITTLE Nev R Sieze on the threads when I install them as well. I also put some WD40 on the snout so the balancer slides on nice.
Sounds like possibly whoever built your engine may have used an impact wrench?

It takes a Mopar to catch a Mopar.

Hello: Sounds like possibly whoever built your engine may have used an impact wrench? NYrr496 said that Not saying you did this but I have. On the other hand i've done the same thing to the Caliper bolt in the front spindle with a impact. Seems something gets in the threads and seats during assembly probaly. Then we hit it with an iimpact it cross threads enough to do damage but still comes off. One good reason not to spin'em off to fast. Problem is you got no feel for what that bolt is doing with an impact....but we all use them. Maynard
