Some say,"... race car's don't have alternators...." They obviously were not running their electric fuel pump(s), electric water pump, electric fans, electronic ignition, head ligths, brake lights, radio (non-mega watt version), and of course the back up lights while trying to back, UP HILL, into the lone middle parking space at the local cruise night and have the engine stall while only half way into the space so that you are now blocking the main alley way. (Yes, this is experience talking!) A second Optima is only as good as its charge. No one has cables, so you have to call a friend to come bring you everything; cables AND a jump.  \/][
Point being; it sucks. Second point: Don't lose your alternator even if you are a race car. At some point you'll wish you had it. If you want to make it disappear from view, make it smaller and/or, at the very least, mount it down low. If it is staring back at you by being mounted high and left on the longest belt tensioning bracket known to man (Chevy), you can't help but notice it. If you mount it low on the right down in that little pocket, all you'll see is the pulley. Well, maybe a bit more, but it is now out of the way and hidden by the rest of that fire breathing Big Block. At one point I had mine mounted to the frame rail and with an andjusting bracket coming up fron the K-member. All the parts (GM isle) were generically available from Pep Boys; which helps. (see pic) It worked great with a one wire 100A alt...  until I went to elephant ears. *sigh* More engineeering is now required and under way.
Here's what teh after market has to offer...  (see pic 2)

You Guys shouldn't let your minds idle too long without some constructive thought. But!!! I did see
a old dodge (in the 20's) with a starter that turned into a generator when the engine started. Also,
the nascar guys run a circulator pump off of the pinion yoke to cool the differential (9" ford).
The best tip so far, in my opinion is the small hydraulic pump and the oil driven motor. Hey, this
just came to me; a small turbo in the exhaust pipe to power a small alternator! I'm heading to the
patent office monday morn. Oh gee's look what time it is, I need to go to bed.  Goodnight Guys.
                                                                                                  Cheers,  Budd

Wait a minute... No kidding around.  I remember a company that used to build an alternator into the back of a water pump. It has to be a belt driven pump and it may possibly only be for Chevys.   I'll see if I can find anything on it.

Look what I found for ya:

It may only be for small blocks, but I think they do custom stuff.  OR you could buy the big block Chevy one and use the Indy adapter.
I just looked at the water pump catalog, they have a big Mopar pump and it looks like it's cut to accept the alternator.  I'd call em.
