I left my old Dart out in a rain storm years ago with the air cleaner up through the hood and one cylinder filled with water. I went to fire it up later and CLUNK the starter stopped dead from hyrdolock. Like an idiot I kept hitting the key until it cleared itself and fired up. All was fine but it scared me enough to drop the air cleaner and put the solid hood back on.

My air ceraner is out of the hood. The real old prostock scoop from the 70s is open in the front. It sits outside and has been driven in the rain for probally 30 years at least.Never had any problems. To get enough water in it you woyuld need a monsoon. That and if it does hydrolock you will not turn the motor over with a starter unless you pull the plugs first no matter what anyone says.Enough water in a cylinder to stop the piston will not move unless you have no rings in it.Ive seen a few cars hydrolock at work and they will not turn oner even old worn out ones till the plugs get pulled.Rocky

Make a cover out of something like a larger bucket, cut to fit, with magnets on it to hold it on the hood when it is parked.

So, a little rainwater sucking into the air cleaner is not a problem, even if you get caught in a thunderstorm?

Water ran down the hold-down stud allowing enough water in (after an 8 hr work day) to hydrolock the motor. Rings were fresh, valves were not the best though. All it takes is 85.5 ccs in an 85 cc combustion chamber. Starter has enough torque to cause serious engine damage (ie. cracked piston) and enough pressure to squeeze that water out through ring gaps, poor valve seats, etc. (or maybe make a new path ) So, a little rainwater sucking into the air cleaner is not a problem, even if you get caught in a thunderstorm?
Rain while driving won't hurt. Water injection was an old drag racing trick. Reduces detonation and cools the air charge to increase density for more HP.

You guys crack me up...
You can always cover the front of the air cleaner's leading half with plastic to protect it from plugging up with water and causing it to restrict due to being saturated. If you use a scoop, looks better than a bag or umbrella, like a Hemi type you might want to put in an dam that directs rain/moisture around the air cleaner element.
Although there is another alternative, but it requires changing your air cleaner...

Hello: PureGTS: Hey guy can you send me the Mopar Performance number on that air cleaner? I can't find it in Mancini's paper.
