Topic: Kinda silly question: A body four speed in a Charger? (Read 135 times)

I plan to (hopefully) finally get started on my Charger sometime in the next few months. I have the engine covered (440) have the rear (8 3/4) but no transmission. However I do have an A-833 sitting on the floor out of a 72 Dart. The Charger was an original /6 904 car so I imagine the mount will match up, but what about the shifter? Will it be too funky, or would it work? I'd just stick it in and find out, but I don't have a bell housing yet, if I'd need to track down a B body specific unit I'll just go with a 727.
Thanks

Thats not a silly question, its a good one,if you want a car that will .Get some red lines tires and leave 80ft.marks in the front someones house, that car can.But sometimes if you wanta bracket race get an automatic. I like Crazy Larry's Charger 71' I think.

A-bodies since 1978, this one since 1983

The shifter will come up through the floor in the wrong place and a custom floor hump will be required OR a custom shifter mounting plate with b-body shift rods.

Will it be to far forward?

Nope, too far back. The problem will be in clearing the trans cross member with the shift rods, and not the bolt-in member. The 1-2 and 3-4 rods go ABOVE the weld-in crossmember so a custom hump or shofter mounting plate will be necessary.

Actually the 72 Charger may use the E-body mounting position, so if this si correct, then the shifter will be too far forward.

Yeah the 71+ B bodies shared a lot of E body parts IIRC.

What about length? I Don't know anything about automatics, but I do know that if your Charger had a B-body 4 speed in it, and you swap to an A-body 4-speed, the a-body trans is shorter and will require a longer driveshaft.
Perhaps the 904 is the same length as an a-body 4-speed? I'm sure Jim can chime in here....

The A body 833 is the same length as the 904, since this car originally had a 904 in it thats what made me consider the swap.
