Reverse Light Wiring
« on: July 15, 2008, 05:46:30 PM »

In a 68 dart, what activates the reverse lights?  Is it supposed to be part of the neutral safty switch on the tranny or were they activated by the column shifter when put in reverse?  I want to locate this switch on my car.  I have a wiring diagram but it is messing with my head and am having a hard time understanding it.  This was a 68, slant 6 with auto on the column.  Thanks.

It is also adjustable............... If you had a console the switch was mounted to the side of the shifter.

Where the switch lives it gets all the debris from everywhere by your feet and after years of that it likes to stick. There is a little rod that sticks out fron the column that moves and pushes against another rod on the switch forcing it to slide left to right. In a perfect world, it has a spring that keeps tension on it so it follows the movement of the column's rod. Unfortunately the dirt and debris down there boogers the switch and the spring can no longer get it to follow the column's rod properly. (Especially if you sand blasted the firewall; Guess how I know...   \/][) They usually just require a bit of cleaning/flushing with WD40 to get them to recover. Some spray grease after that and your good to go.

Happy backing!

 agree
Don't know much on column ones, but on a console, it's almost like a black stud where the shifter sits in place in the reverse position. Alot of the time, those are broke.

The plug for the floor shifter is there in the same location; right at the base of the column. Look for the purple and white wires, follow thm and they'll take you to the switch. It is adjustable but kind of a booger to get at the screws. You can adjust it without getting out from under the dash with a test light. Just don't forget to either block the wheels or set the parking brake.

Thanks for all the help.  I finally got out to the car today and found the wiring and the switch.  It was unplugged but it don't matter cause i don't have the column shift anymore.  I just wanted to find the wires so i could wire it into my shifter.  Thanks again.
