centering my steering wheel
« on: July 15, 2008, 09:54:51 PM »

I need to bring my steering wheel back to the right. Which way would I turn my tie rod adjusters to accomplish this?

Don't worry, the alignment is already crap. I just want the steering wheel back where it should be, or close.

How bout taking it off and point the tires straight ahead, then put the steering wheel back on.  Maybe someone took it off in the past and didn't put it on straight.  Just a thought Chris.   Dunno

You know I thought about that. but wouldn't that screw up where the turn signal cancel-ers do their thing?

If you want it to go clockwise, adjust the tie rods to the left. To go CCW, adjust them to the right. Picture in your mind which way they would go if the wheel turned.   If you go 1/2 a turn on the passenger side, also go 1/2 a turn on the drivers side to keep everything in line.

i reckon they have one large or double spline that doesn't permit this being done.

Hey Chris nice to meet you at Carlisle.  If your steering wheel is down on the right you need to turn the right side adjuster so that it moves the tire out then turn the left side adjuster the equal amount to toe that tire in.This sould keep your total toe setting close to what you started with. Try one turn on each side then road test, or straighten the steering wheel and eyeball the inside edge of the tires using the rear tire as a reference until they are equal(the road test is easier  lol). Toe them both the opposite direction if the wheel is down on the left.  drinks Quinn

You also might want to turn the steering wheel lock to lock, then split the difference before you start, in order to center the gearbox.

Aftermarket or factory steering wheel?  I've got Grant steering wheels on both my cars and the adaptor allows me to just remove the wheel and clock it whever I need it.

But, that's not a good idea. you can lose turning in one direction or the other. The gear needs to be centered. This is accomplished when both the pitman arm and idler arm are parallel to the frame rails and each other.

Agreed, if the wheel was WAY off center then moving the steering wheel adaptor should not be considered.  Adjusting the tie rod ends is the proper way to do it.  However, in my particular case the steering wheel was only 5 or 10 degrees off from being on center so the short cut of rotating the steering wheel adapter a few degrees was an easier fix then crawling under the car and adjusting the tie ends with trial and error.  If I lost any turning ability its very miniscule and not at all noticed.
