Topic: What should I paint my K with? (Read 467 times)

Started working on my K frame tonight. Got her all stripped down. Planning on sandblasting it. Then rewelding some of the less than ideal seams. Boy they did a crappy job of welding that thing up.
anyhow, what should I paint that puppy with that is tough? I've heard of por-15, but I thought that was for use over rust. Will it work on a freshly blasted surface? Is there something else that I may like better.
What have you all used with good success?
Thanks,
CE

Either powdercoat or that 2 part chassis epoxy that Eastwood sells.

There is a guy who does powder coating locally. How does it compare -wise to the epoxy, por15 type of coatings?

this may be completely shunned, but I dont have the money to get anything powdercoated, and besides that theres no one around here that powdercoats anything that size, ive had great success with stripping it to metal, cleaning it like crazy with prepall and laquer thinner, then spraying it with engine paint. it looks good, sticks well, is heat, rust, and grease/gasoline resistant. all ive used it on look great...even after time. plus if you scratch it or something, you can fix it with out having to take it back to the powdercoter. just my 2cents worth...

If it comes down to doing it yourself, I've had great success with Rust Oleum. Very tough paint. Por 15 is great to use underneath, but it should be covered up.

Hi Chris, I had all of my 66 Coronet's front suspension parts that could be powder coated done back in 2000 when I did a complete front suspension rebuilt and it ran me a little over $200.00 to do everything including my K-frame. It still looks like brand new 8 years later and with the powder coating, the suspension parts are MUCH easier to keep clean. Spend the money ONCE for the powder coating and it will look good for you for a LONG time my friend! Richard

Yes I agree. You can also prime it with etching primer and then follow it up with a 2 part catalyzed paint like eastwoods. Also, a local guy here is dirt cheap on powdercoating, he could do it for about $100.

if you have other stuff to be coated at the same time you will get a better deal. paint is better than por if there is no rust,p.o.r doesn't like smooth metal surfaces

For what it's worth, I shot mine with Zero Rust mixed 3:1 w/ hardware store acetone. It runs about $60 a gallon. Then I shot a couple top coats of gloss black rustoleum professional straight from the rattle can. It looks good, but has no road miles yet. A lot of people have issues w/ zero rust drying. But mine dried very quickly even in 60 degree temps. It dried to the touch in about 30 minutes or a little less. It's very hard too. I just used 3 or 4 very light coats.

ive been using that eastwood chassis black over epoxy prime lately, no road miles but it sprays pretty nice right out of the can. last time around i did all suspension parts with rattle can engine paint, and it held up ok, i guess. then i started bombing everythign with rust oleum cut 20% with acetone, that seesm to hold up pretty well and you can lay it down nice and heavy. i looked into powedercoating, once it was a friend of a member here, new business, i felt the guy tried to rape me.
