i don't see why you would want to make them solid. the are acturally the best of both worlds, rubber and failsafe.

I have the original spool mounts for my small block.  But the rubber was pretty soft (that happens when you're 34 years past prime) and I put PST polyurethane inserts into the original shells.  They fill up ovals fully but still give some flex.  Works good so far and vibration isn't bad.  I don't have pictures of those.
