440 HP Cast Crank?
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:50:43 PM »

Hello:
I recently picked up a 440 hp with a cast crank...I thought all 440 hp's were forged cranks.   However on the top pad it says
440 E HP as I decipher this the E stands for cast crank.  Also the damper says " use with 440 cast crank only".
Just wonder how many of you have come across this before?

As far as I know all 67-72 440's were forged cranks, they started to phase in cast cranks around 73 and I think pretty much by 75 they were mostly cast cranks, in those few years chysler was still getting rid of their 6 pack rods and forged cranks so is was hit or miss sometimes what you got. My 74 Dodge D100 pick-up came factory with a forged crank 440 and six pack rods and I have heard of some people having forged cranks in some 75 Dodge pick-ups though.

i had one of them in my tow car for years. then put in my race car for a couple more. then put it in my street car and beat on it with 3 stages of  nitrous. 2-100 hp stages and a 250 stage. lasted a couple of more years before it finally wore out.  Roll Eyes

The cast cranks are very durable and they even weigh less than a forged steel crank and less rotating weight means quicker response to input. Think of all the 360's running in stock classes that use cast cranks. If there were issues we'd have heard about it long ago. Although I'm not sure I'd be putting "juice" (NOS) to them; but bOb is braver than I am, so I will defer to his bravery at this point.

Hello:
Okay, well I have nothing against the cast crank really, it's a point of info for me.   After if it's good enough for BOB it's got to be ok.
Actually I have 2, 440 cast cranks, one turned 0.10 x 0.10 the other one brand new never been installed.  So far still haven't found a use for them.
