I have a vertex mag reman in the box from the mid 80's. Assuming it will still work......what are the advantages/disadvantage to using it? Drag only car.

it'll fire a real high compression engine. they don't use any battery voltage. the faster they turn the more voltage they put out. they last pretty much forever, just keep the points clean. you need a transformer instead of a coil, they put out a/c voltage. once the motor is started there is no way to shut it off, you need to ground it or kill the fuel to the motor. you have to keep it grounded while you work on it or anytime it's not running because if you turn the motor over, even by hand it will fire up. if everone you race against doesn't have the best rf filters the mageto will screw everything up, even your own hotrod's electronics.

...Hmmm... Who needs a radar dector if you can blast his gun's reception!?!? Oh, Oh! And it'll fry his radio so he can't call for back up... and his car / bike won't start from all the RF interference as you go by... every time he gets near you his car / bike stalls! Plus your neighbors will hate you as everytime you start your car to work on it because their cable, internet, phone, micro wave, etc. goes out.  I gotta get me one of these...  |

I have a great mag story. One time when I was 19 or so, I was working in an offshore speed boat engine shop. We had a pair of 557 inch chevy big blocks on the dyno with Dominators and Vertex Mags. The boss was attempting to start the first one and was cranking and cranking it and pumping the throttle to give it more fuel, suddenly, he goes Oh yeah! and opens the ground switch for the mag.
Cranks it, the thing goes BOOM!, The carb rips the studs out of the intake and shoots straight up as far as the braided line would stretch and then crashed back onto the intake. Needless to say, I was rolling on the floor laughing.

How about checking for spark and the motor starts up? Then you can't let go of the wire because of how much power that is running out of the bottom of your feet.

You can use an inductive timing light. I sure as hell wouldn't want to get hit by one of those things. MSD hurts enough.
