Patent Pending is a different form to fill out, and runs about $2000.  PP status allows you one year of protection to check things like market demand to see if it's worth getting an actual patent. It's also used to protect short-term high volume stuff - things that people make in quantity, saturate the market until the fad passes - alot of little plastic trinkets are made this way.

Did you guys ever see the commercial for 409? The guy picks up a squirt bottle labelled "410" and blasts a hole in the wall, then the voice says, "409, Because the world isn't ready for 410"  LOL
...Ok, that was unrelated, but it was funny Grin

LOL----Never saw that commercial,Bill ,,are you makin that up ?
I invented a fishin line storage / spooler  a few years back--  had real trick tensioners---gave it up cause the patent laws & infringements were so scary .
Had read the Irons article,,,he was even in a few months earlier  in a "YOUNG GUNS " article,,,,I wish I could be set -up like senior so my kid could do this deal after he got his engineering degree  !nanr,,,,,,,,,  nawwwww,,,,,, It is a neat car !!!!
I read the article with interest thinking they were trying for a combo for the B-body merging with your design ,,thought they were just dipping into a little journalism venture,,,my niavity once again kept me  from seeing the ensueing greed that was attatched ,,,, I like your "more power to them ",Bill ,,,it shows you've been there done that & know the score !!!! Grin
Was wondering if you might send me a  free lynx set -up  & I'll do an article on a Scamp install,,,,yeah,,,& then an alterkation for a front end article,,,,,yeah,,,,,,, \/][------------Mopar Tom

I would imagine it's like the Mustang II suspension deal, everyone makes crossmembers and their own version of it.

All you can do is make the best product possible, price it right and wait for the cream to rise to the top.

No, it's a real commercial, at least it's on directv, not sure about cable. When he squeezes the trigger on the 410 bottle, a laser blows a hole in the wall. It's great Smiley

That commercial rules.

Here's a couple of dumb patent things.

My mother is an avid golfer and golf instructor. Back when graphite shafts became popular, she invented Shaft Savers, which was nothing more than a soft cloth lined plastic tube that you put the club shaft in so it wouldn't rub against other clubs. She was granted a patent and immediately, Diawa tried to purchase it from her.  She refused, figuring she'd make more money by herself. My best guess is she probably was able to make about 100 of these things by hand and gave up.  As soon as the patent ran out, I saw Shaft Savers all over the place.  I warned her.

Then, my dad came up with the idea of a plastic sheet you leave on your windshield at night in the winter and just peel off in the morning.  No ice, no frost, I couldn't believe it.  I told him 100 times, you should patent that.  He never did anything and of course, a while later, someone else came up with it and patented it.

I was only beaten out by about a month on the crank socket. Back when I was 18 or 19, working in a marine engine building shop, I made a bunch of crank sockets from balancer hubs. My boss thought they were the coolest thing ever and told me I should patent them. I began the procedure and Moroso came up with it a short time after.

Without going into details, an in-law of mine developed a little invention for pickup trucks and patented it.  Pretty simple idea, but pretty cool and none of the manufacturers had ever offered anything like it.   He went to each of the manufacturers and offered the idea and patent to them and they all snubbed him.  Since then, GM now offeres something like it on their trucks, not sure about Ford, and Dodge is coming out with it in '09.

Last year he settled with GM for "patent infringement" for more than what he'd offered to sell them the thing for in the first place!   He has seen the version Dodge is coming out with and told me as soon as it hits the streets, he's taking them to court too (infringement).

This whole process started 10-11 years ago.   He's finally cashing in on his idea.  I'm talking millions   throw money   so I guess it was well worth it.   Funny thing is, after all is said and done, all he did was develop the prototype.   He never went into production of it.   Worked out pretty well for him...   throw money

Back in the mid '80s I was doing a lot of field sevice and came up with an idea. A device that could read your car as it went through a toll plaza (we have tons of 'em here in NY) without stopping and charge it to your account.

I was told it was a stupid idea and dropped it.  \/][

NY496,
No, it's another idea.   I don't want to disclose more details and risk the whole thing being on the internet.   Wouldn't want to be the cause of making his fight any harder for him.

Funny, I had some business dealings with the Big3 back before his idea and told him at the beginning of this thing that they'd snub him and that's what they did.   I thought they'd steal the idea and get away with it.   GM didn't get away with it and based on that, I now would bet he'll get a nice sum out of Chrysler.  Plus, if Ford doesn't offer it yet, I bet they WILL just to be competative, and then he can go after THEM.   I remember way back that he'd had quite an investment in the whole thing and I felt bad for him that it didn't go anywhere.  Took a while, but now he's cashing in pretty good.  I'm glad for him and his wife...

I bet if they are doing it regardless of the patent, it's good for their business as well.

Dude, you ever see those electronic signs up by Carle Place on the Northern State parkway that tell you how many minutes it takes to get to the Wantagh Parkway and other destinations?  Know how they work?  They scan Easy Pass as you drive by and then they scan you again down the road. NOT COOL. I bet ANYTHING they start issuing speeding tickets based on that one day.  You gotta see the container I made for mine so it can't be picked up.

Rental car places have lottle boxes you put your toll pass into, you can open it and it will scan, or close it and it wont, it suctions to the windshield and is only a little bigger than the pass.

I know. Big Brother is watching. Jersey Turnpike, same thing. Reads your pass getting on and off. EZ pass gives you a plastic bag thats supposed to prevent the thing from being read. I wonder how effective they really are?
