Digital Voltmeter?
« on: July 19, 2008, 07:54:34 PM »

Does anyone have one? I was looking at them at Sears just a little bit ago. Found one for $30, that looks like it's a decent one. I'm to poor for the $120 ones.

What do you think of these? Something useful to have?

How can you NOT have one?

I wouldn't be any help in the saving money department, I have a Fluke that was probably 300 bucks, but I also make my living with a meter.

I guess you could buy a cheap one and learn to use it and then when you have the money to step up, get a Fluke. Make sure to get some alligator clips and some real long test leads.   Once you start using one and learning how it works, you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

If you are referring to a digital multimeter then yes get one. If you are doing any diagnostic work on todays vehicles all electrical values are measured in milivolts....something an analog meter can't measure. $25-39 should buy a good one.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to go to Sears today and buy one.

My dad told me to save my money, but like what West said "every toolbox needs one".

I also make my living with one. I've got a fluke at work, but a less expensive one for home. There are things you just can't really check without one.

Another tool that's a great help is a test light. I have a couple of Snap Ons with really long leads. One of them is really trick. It lights up red for positive and green for negative.

Well, I bought one. It was about $25.

Just few things:

AC/DC Voltage
DC Current
Resistance
Temperature
Continuity / Diode Test.

Eventually I'll buy a Fluke, but this one should be good for now. It's just a cheap Craftsman. 1 year warranty though.

It'll do ya just fine as a learning tool. You'll know when you've outgrown that one and need a better one.

I've got a Fluke I bought back in the late 80's when I was doing engineering work for forklifts and transports. I've beat the livin crap out of it. It fell 50' from a crane in the Jeep / Carvan stamping plant, went to the bottom of a 25' diving pool, took an 80mph spill off of a CBX, etc., etc. It has outlasted no less than a dozen Micronta and Blue Point DVM's.
