Windshield removal
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:54:07 PM »

I need to replace both front and back glass seals and want to know if there is a easy way to get the glass out. I though maybe I could cut the rubber off the top of the glass and then just push it out from inside the car Huh  Any thought will help. Thanks, Eric 4 speed

agree

Except, I kicked the windshield out of a 4 door we were parting out. Don't do it that way..   Pull trim, cut the rubber.

If you are re-using the glass, be VERY careful it doesn't crack. Even taking out glass in a new car puts stress on it to where it'll crack in 400 different directions.

Good luck.  Grin

we had this topic not too long ago, a lot of people said to use something like strong fishing line and run it around the edges to make sure it was cut free completely
we've removed a lot of dart windows, broken a lot, and saved several too, you can never be too careful

Somone told me to use an old guitar string. Guess that would work well.

I just cut the rubbers off (like Chad said) and let the sun heat things up and make 'em soft, then the windshield practically fell out.

You can also just pull the locking strip out of the rubber, and let it sit in the sun and push the glass out. You don't need to cut the rubber....but I guess if you're not reusing it, it would just make the job easier.

Yeah, don't forget to take the round rubber cord (locking strip) from the center of the gasket. That will make things go a lot smoother.  If you haven't done one before you might think the gasket is one solid piece but actually that locking strip is press into a channel in the gasket. If you pull that out; everything comes out pretty easy.

How do I locate this locking strip?  I already removed the window trim. I am able to lift the rubber off the window and can see the edge of the glass. Is the locking strip at the edge of the glass or do I need to get at it from inside the car? Thanks, Eric 4 speed

It's right in the middle of the window gasket on the outside.  It's hard to see until you start pulling it out.  It's black, round, rubber "rope" about 1/4" diameter and 15' long.
