What is that purge thing drag racers do just before racing where a shot of gas comes out of the car into the air? Forgive my ignorance please!! Grin

nitrous  this is usually done to relieve excess bottle pressure to obtain the optimum pressure which is 950psi also it is to get any air out of the line after putting a new bottle in the car

Nitrous in the bottle is in liquid form.  When you use your system, some nitrous remains in the line between the bottle and the solenoid.  this over time turns from liquid to a gas.  the purge is used to eliminate all of the gaseous nitrous so when you hit the throttle, nothing but liquid nitrous is injecrted into the motor.  Its an important piece of a nitrous system.  On the street people freak out and some won't race you when they see the purge flume.  at night one of those colored light deals look pretty neat too.

I've wondered about that part of a drag race car.  I didn't know what it was called and now I know a whole lot about it.  Thank you.  Great question and great answers.  Learn something new every day. thank you

Several years ago one of the Mopar mags had a picture of a real high end car that went in for some kind of body work (maybe MCG). Some how the purge lines got mixed up and the first time the owner hit the purge button the motor grenaded and blew half the front end apart. They explained it but I don't remember. What caused that reraction? Joe.
