Your opinions please
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:41:21 PM »

Hi folks,

As some of you know, I have been getting ready to do a complete interior restoration on my 1966 Coronet 500 and one of the items that I've been trying to decide on is the steering wheel. I am going to put the interior back to an almost completely stock set up with the exception of my AutoMeter tach and gauges and my floor console mounted B&M Quicksilver shifter.

My two current ideas at this point are to either use my factory stock 16"black plastic steering wheel that looks like the one in the picture below of another 66 Coronet that has a white and black interior that looks like mine will after I'm done and the other is a 15" aftermarket steering wheel with a 1 3/4" thick walnut rim on it and comes as a complete kit including the steering wheel, horn button, horn contacts, column adapter and all mounting hardware.

What do you guy's think, stock wheel, aftermarket wooden wheel, or something else that would look good with a stock looking interior?

Thanks for your opinions! Cool

Richard

I like the stock wheel better.  I just realized, the 66 wheel is different than the 67?  Three spoke and half horn ring?

There were several different options for steering wheels on both the 66 and 67 Coronets. In both model years, there were 2 spoke wheels with partial and full horn rings, three spoke wheels and wood rim wheels. From what I can remember, the two spoke wheels with the partial and full horn rins are very similar if not exactly the same on 66 and 67 cars, but the three spoke and wood rim wheels while very close, were a little different, but it's been a while since I've qwned my 67 Coronet R/T (sold it back in 1978) and am more faniluar with the 66 cars. I've also considered trying to find a nice 66 or 67 factory wood rim wheel, but everthing I've seen has either been trashed or priced WAY MORE than I want to spend on one!  \/][  The top wheel is a 66 wood rim versionand the bottom two are 67 wheels.

Thought that I had found a nice set of factory defroster nozzles on ebay, but when the gentleman went to remove them from the 67 Coronet he is parting out in N.Y, he found them both to be damaged, so the never ending search continues for those two parts!  Frustrated \/][

if your interior has some wood grain accents in it, i would use the wood steering wheel but if your interior is mostly black i would do the stock wheel or another black/chrome aftermarket wheel. JMO

No wood interior trim was offered on the 66 Coronets that I knoe of except for the wood rim steering wheels.
