I'll think of the site. Sells rebuilt ones...

Tip: check craig's list for "clunkers" people want to get rid of, a so-so condition motor could probably be gotten w/boat for about the price of a piece if you could find it. If you can afford having a boat sitting around then that may be an option.

They did make small ones, but WHY?Huh   I can't imagine you could still get parts for them.

That's cool! Merc was made by Chrysler through the 80's into the early 90's and a 90hp would be right nice!!!

Cool little boat.   I still think you're crazy for wanting a Chrysler outboard, but the boat is neat.   I have a 12 foor Archer Craft my stepson is currently working on.  I keep thinking a Yamaha 3 cylinder 90 would be cool on there, but I don't think he has the skill yet.  Maybe a 50.

Actually i believe it was "force" that chrysler made in the 80s and 90s and yes one of those would be cool too. These boats are tiny they are made of 2 sheets of plywood and only seat one person.Anything bigger than 20hp isnt possible due to the weight and overpower effect.Look at it this way....40 kmph on water is fast enough for the kids....and me!

They are dangerous ....I had a very good friend get killed in one like that when he came around a bend in the river and there was a boat on the wrong side coming right at him, he swerved to avoid head on and ran into some bushes, hit a low branch and broke his neck.
Be careful on it!

My cousins own this recycle yard for boat stuff. Pretty cool place actually but VERY slow right now...fuel  Sad

I had one of those when I was a wee  lad , they are definately a pant load , a 20 hp 2 stroke is just about right with a few refinements, they will fly, and of course they will also turn into a submarine , that part is not cool , spent many hours of fun in them when i was younger, i would have another in a heart beat , kids will love it

There are many of us out there who collect and run Chrysler boats and motors.  Parts are easily found if you know who to talk to.  Check out: www.geocities.com/thechryslercrew.

The marine division was very innovative and successful but Chrysler Corp. was in financial hardship in the early '80s and liquidated non-core businesses.

A few facts:

Chrysler bought West Bend in the 60s to start Chrysler outboards.
They also bought Lonestar to start Chrysler boats.

In the 80's Chrysler sold the outboard division to Brunswick Corp (owner of Mercury).
Brunswick renamed the engine to "Force"

I currently run a Chrysler boat, a 1976 Commando 154 with a 1972 85 HP engine.

Thanks Jeff
Im assuming it shouldnt be too hard or expensive tracking down a 20hp chrysler outboard...or even a force outboard of the same power,im under the impression "force"was the 1980 chrysler motor name.....correct?

Strictly going on memory, I remember when Chrysler became Force.  I would bet there is very little that's interchangeable between the two. They appear VERY different.

I have seen many Chrysler 20HP outboards listed on both Craigslist and eBay in the past.  I would suggest you do some surfing.  You may also want to try www.kijiji.ca which is predominately Canadian listings.

I did a quick Google search and found this one: http://worcester.craigslist.org/boa/778248496.html

The change to Force did not mean technical changes for the first few years after the purchase so the early Force engines were Chryslers with different paint.  The guys on the Chrysler Crew website will put you in the right direction. http://www.geocities.com/thechryslercrew

Thanks guys,i have checked kijiji and craigslist before but i suppose i should get back on it.I have no problem buying a force really no matter what year so long as they had a reliable motor(boats are new to me).The idea is to do the boat in a direct connection theme and if i have to re-letter the force motor as a chrysler thats fine with me.

You will have more luck finding a 20HP Chrysler than a Force so you should be okay.

Is it really that bad NYrr496 ?I dont know anything about boats but this is just for a little seaflea for doing runs up and down a small lake.Is it just that parts are hard to find or that its a poorly built motor? The point was to build a cool little boat in moar colours and have a chrysler engine on it.I appreciate the advice im just curious why its such a bad idea.

I live on Long Island.  Nothing but boats.  I couldn't even begin to tell you where to get a Chrysler outboard or parts anymore.  There used to be a big marina here that sold Chrysler outboards and bass boats back in like 1981 or 82.  Once chrysler dropped the line, I never saw that stuff anymore.
I always have a 16-20 foot speedboat kickin' around.  I've found the later Johnson and Evinrude loop charged stuff to be pretty bullet proof.  parts are available everywhere.  they even had a line of little race motors ranging from 15-45 horsepower with little bullet lower units and short shafts.
I would just hate to see you get a motor, break something and not be able to fix it because no parts are available.  That old motor is probably fine, but I'll bet money you won't find anything for it.
