flat black hood???
« on: July 26, 2008, 12:04:55 PM »

Hey Guys,

I am going to paint my 71 scamp either sassy grass green or sublime green with a black bumblebee stripe and was thinking of spraying the hood flat black....the hood has no scoops on it or anything, just purely stock....do you guys think this would look stupid? if anyone has any pics of their a-bodies with blacked out hoods post em up....

I don't think it would look stupid. It would help kill glare from shiney paint, I mean, that was what it was intended for. Still used on aircraft today for the same reason. But, if you have access to, or can get a spare hood, it might not be a bad idea to have it painted body color while you're at it, in case you cange your mind. Plus that gives you one to experiment on with scoop(s) if you like. One for race day one for street use. Just a thought.
I have three, the OE (in the AAR's box, painted with the rest of the car), an AAR cowl induction glass hood and another OE, gutted, for the SS hemi scoop in flat black (under consrtuction). Just in case.

This is only my opimion, but a flat black hood always looks "dirty" to me and looks bad when used in combo with a really bright color such as what your talking about with the bright green. When I first painted my Coronet back in 1990, I painted it's hood all flat black and it just looked dirty all of the time and was made to look even worse by the VERY bright yellow body color. I then had the hood repainted the way you see it in the pictures below and in my humble opinion, it made the car look a LOT nicer with the addition of the two tone paint scheme and the semi gloss black! I know you wanted pictures of an A-Body, but at least you can see what a semi gloss black hood treatment on my  Coronet looks like. As far as having a blacked out hood with no hood scoopp goes, no big deal to me, as I think it would look great.  Cool

Just my opinion on it, but I think it is just too much black when the entire hood is painted, but I DO like the look if you leave the last 3 to 4 inches of the edge of the hood body color and the rest of it semi-gloss black.  I always painted them with single stage enamal (Dupont Centari) and used a flattening agent to kill the shine.

Here is a picture of one of our members cars (sorry, but I don't remember who owns this beautiful car) that shows a black hood with body colored scoops that looks cool. The other picture is of a 1/18 scale 1971 Demon with the factory black out treatment with a Sassy Grass Green paint job. Yes it has scoops, but you get the idea of what it would look like.

I think just painting the hood flat black will make the car look unfinished.  I would either carry it over on to the fenders a few inches and also back to the windshield sort of like the AAR Cudas and T/A Challengers, or do wide stripes like on a 69 roadrunner with car color down the middle.
I LOVE flat black on a car, but it has to be done correctly.

The stripes go great with scoops, but without they aren't so great looking.

That's my two hundredths of a dollar.

hey these are some real good suggestions guys that i never even thought of before...i too personally think that a flat black hood without scoops will not look good....it needs to have something else going on....i dont know who here is familiar with scamp hoods, but they have a bulge that goes the middle and then tapers out at the front...my friend told me that he thinks i should paint the part around the bulge flat black and leave the middle raised area body colour...just an idea though...anyone else with suggetions/opinions?

Definitely go with Semi-Gloss Black   instead of Flat Black, if you decide to paint the hood Black.

Flat Black will show fingerprints, dirt & dust...and will look like shyt in no time.

Here's a thought, (that sounds rather "ghetto", but will work).  Go get some flat or semi-gloss contact paper and apply it to your hood in the pattern you want.  Drive around for a few days and see if you like it.  It'll be easier to take off or change.
Fine tune it to something you like, (or can live with), THEN paint it on.

But I'm just another opinionated S.O.B.

Im thinking of doing something like richard's yellow coronet to my hood, but minus the scoop....semi gloss black on the outside with the middle raised area the green body colour (either sublime or sassy grass)

Hence my suggestion about using the contact paper as temporary applique as a layout aid.

My car is total flat black and I love it, but she's a sheltered child, ya know covered up even when shes
asleep in the garage.

I painted a buddys Mustang cowl hood flat black and it looked good for about 2 months then began to
turn almost chalky within 6 months it looked bad, Car is driven to work daily so it tested the conditions.
We painted satin black two weeks ago looks MUCH better we'll see how it holds up.

I can't remember who makes it, but I saw in a car mag a while back that someone has created a flat black paint that doesn't get chalky.  It was some company that caters to older rods.

Paint it base/clear just like you were doing a gloss black paint job, but add a flattening agent to the clear. You'll have to experiment to get the right effect.

I'm doing a similar thing with my Duster, but it has an AAR hood with six pack scoop.

I'll see if I can find any pics like your car. <edit> Nope. Didn't have any.

If you want an inexpensive way to do a hood treatment, my stripes were painted with Tremclad semi gloss black from a rattle can.  It has a low sheen and so far stands up really well to the elements.  I also used it on the rearend, the K frame, the rad, I love the stuff, and its as close as your local Canadian Tire.

How about a flat or satin black hood with a graphic like in the pics below only use sublime or whatever color you decide to paint your car.  You could paint the bumblebee stripe the same shade black as the hood.    Dunno

The green Duster Bill72dart posted is exactly what I mean.  See the way the black carries onto the fenders and the cowl area?  Looks like it belongs there and not like you bolted on a black hood.
