Trying to find a good horn
« on: July 27, 2008, 05:42:54 PM »

I'm sick of people shredding through high speed left turns right in front of me when I'm halfway through an intersection (you know, the ones that are about a quarter mile back when their light turns RED), and the horn in my Duster is barely audible at all. So what do you guys recommend as a good "wake the dead and shatter windows" horn that I could swap in? I'd like to stick to electric so that I can keep it in the stock location. I'm looking for either aftermarket or something off an older American land yacht. If it's louder'n shit and not high pitched, that's exactly what I want.

Suggestions plz...

I think the horns on the newer Caravans are pretty good. Otherwise, my old SHO had the best factory horns I've ever heard.

I just put air horns on my wifes Jeep, while shopping for them I saw an aftermarket horn by Bad Boys (I think) that had some high db levels but I have no idea how it soiunds.

They'll move over and beg your pardon to boot.
If you don't want to get that crazy, I have two Wolo Bad Boys in my Yukon.  Very LOUD. One night, my wife and her girlfriend were in my wife's car ahead of me in traffic.  The cops were letting out a baseball game and making us passersby wait for the entire stadium to empty out.  I was Layin on my horn. My wife's friend was like listen to that maniac.  My wife knew it was me.  She told me afterwards if I wasn't such an asshole, life would be boring.

Groovy. I'll add that to my list of cars to look for in the junk yards.

Hi-Lo from a mid 60s Chrysler should do the trick.

Can't recall the sound of those ones. I suppose if I did that in my Duster, it'd still keep it mostly Chrysler stuff.

I've discovered though that with a proper relay and the right size of wiring, even stock horns sound way better. Makes me want to try the Caddy horns...

Perusing the junk yard today, I noticed that pretty much all older American cars used the same trumpet style horns. Everything from Chevy trucks to Ford LTDs to (a lesser extent) a '57 Belvedere that was there. So I grabbed a pair out of a '67 Galaxy to try out. I've already got a 15A relay wired up so I just have to mount the horns and we'll see how they sound...

Dude... Wolo Bad Boys.

I thought of those, but heard they're pretty high pitched. I want something that actually sounds like an American car in my Duster, and something that actually sounds like a truck in my Toyota.

Edit: found a sound sample here http://www.wolo-mfg.com/419-519-stereo.wav

Sounds like it'd be loud enough, but I just don't dig the tone. It doesn't quite have that "you are about to involuntarily shit yourself" sound to it.

Now their Cannonball Express horn, I like!! http://www.wolo-mfg.com/837.wav

I've grown to love that high pitch shrill.  It makes people's hair on the back of their necks stand up.

Is the Bad Boy what you're using?

I have TWO Bad Boys in my truck.  I replaced each stock horn with one.  It gets the job done.

Jebus, that would be an attention getter. I might have to pick one up from Harbor Freight just to see if I like it. I can always return it if I don't dig it...

you want a good sounding loud ass horn, its tuff to beat an air horn. i have a 24" grover horn on my ram, right inside the grill.  it sounds sick. i have thought of sticking one on the dart, i think they would fit nice o nthe bottom of the inner fender. i am definitely putting one on my essex, ive got a 31" single grover for that, holding out till i switch it to 12v though. yeah i might look like a hillbilly with airhorns on everything but hey i have enough cash into my stuff id liek to have the chance to avoid an accident if i can.  oh yeah whatever you do, dont buy one of those road runner knock off horns from ebay. i have one on the dart, its a damn joke.  a kid at the body shop has a hard on for it, he wants it for his 69 super bee clone, i might give it  to him.

Geese..............just get one of those horns they take to games, you know, the ones that have a screw on air tank. Keep it on your seat and you can whip it out at any time. It's great cause you can aim it what ever direction you want, chase someone around with it and keep it by the phone for telemarketers.  LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
