Yet another carb question...
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:20:48 AM »

Got a line on a 4779-5 (750 DP) carb.  I was thinking about it for my "stock" 383.  Carb is setup with an electric choke, OOTB jets (70/80 I think), jet extensions, and 50 cc pumps, and according to the guy barely used.  Too much for the motor, or might it work okay?  Dart is a 4-speed, 3.73 gears, 26" tires.  Yeah a lot of a gear for a stock 383, but will have to suffice till the other motor is built.

I was thinking more along the lines of an Eddy 750 for this motor, probably less to fuss with, but the price is right on this carb, so???

Thanks all.

Just bought the same carb for my 400.  I think it will be fine, especially with the 4 speed.

It'll probably work ok.  Get the jets and power valve right and it should be fine.

Good carb.
I wouldnt bother with 50cc pumps.
Ive got a 750DP setup for E85 and it doesnt have but 30cc on it.
.036 shooters. No stumble with an auto trans. and a 500ci low deck.

Cool.  It has the 50s installed already, so I guess we'll give them a go.  Might be too much of a shot, we'll see I guess.

I'm a newb to DPers, any good links out there on tuning and general info on operation, etc?

Thanks guys.

I don't think the 50cc pumps will make a difference if you have the correct squirters on there.

That's a great carb and it can be made to work with future engine upgrades.

So I picked the carb up today, nice piece.  I am going to go through it for piece of mind though.

The Holley site lists this carb as having 4 corner idle adjustment.  The carb I got is on adjustable on the primary side.  There are recesses in the secondary metering block, but not drilled and tapped for the screws.  Was this maybe a recent feature addition to this carb?  I don't know why the metering block would have been changed...

Either way, considering the stockness of the 383, is 4-corner necessary?  I am thinking no but wanted to ask.  When it is setup like this, are the secondary idle circuits just closed off and everything is set by the primary, or?

Thanks.

The carb you have did come with 4 corner idle,I have set up many of these for racing and street use. Someone has exchanged your secondary fuel block..The block you now have has a fixed nonadjustable idle feed circuit from another carb.I run into this a lot with carbs purchased on e-bay.If you want to discuss this further you can PM me.

Four corner idle only really becomes an advantage with large cams and low vacuum.  You will be fine for the 383.

Werd.

I talked to the guy I bought it from and swears up and down he bought it brand new at Jegs and only had it off the car once to add the jet extensions and pumps.  So who knows... it'll work.
