so the long and the short of it is after three to five long years of trying to get this car running it is at the point where I'm about to give up. 440 up front battery in the back. 1100 battery in the trunk. msd 6a box, blaster coil and pro billet mechanical dist with stock springs in it. when the car sits for more than a day it looses voltage to the msd. so in turn loses spark. when the charger is put on the car it will crank over normal speed. next it will gain spark but feel like its way advanced. when i get it running enough to run around the block and shut it off it feels like its super advanced.... any ideas would help.... list of things ive tried so far. 1. new msd box 2. new grounds from motor to frame 3. new coil. (thinking maby the coil was leaking down) 4. new battery 5. newer style alt. (solved the problem for one sitting) some of the questions that are arising are 1. would it be possible for the fuel pump to draw that much amprage to keep msd from firing? 2. I checked the timing. everything lines up. If a balancer is bad to where it slipps would the dist. be so far out it wouldnt even trigger the tach or spark? 3. other than the pick up in the dist. could the springs be opening too soon and throwing it in advanced? \ thanks again for your knowledge JOhnny

Could be charging related. Sounds like low voltage/amperage screwing with the whole system. Do you know for sure the new alt is hooked up right and charging? Do you have a voltage regultor in the system and is it wired properly? Consider wiring in a voltmeter and an ammeter if you don't have one or the other to troubleshoot with. I fought my motor for a long time until I realized the alt was not wired correctly and was not charging. Also, load test your battery to make sure it is good regardless of whether it is new or not. It might take a charge but it may not be putting out sufficient amps. Make sure you've got some quality grounds, I added about 4 additional grounds.
Just a few thoughts...

thanks. im going to try the grounds again today. then check the alt wiring again. 99% sure the alt and regulator is wired correctly. then if these things fail im going to try a new pick up. I read something on the msd tech website where a guy had the exact same problem and replaced everything the same as i did.... ill keep you posted.

Are you running a cable all the way to the engine compartment so you get good battery voltage to pick up your MSD? Painless makes a good power takeoff and you can also find them on cars in the junkyards. I think it's amperage related as well. I don't think your timing is moving.
Painless Performance, item#40106. Not EXACTLY what I was talking about, but you'll get the point.

I have never been able to get a definative answer/description of how the Nippondenso is supposed to be wired up. FWIW, Mine is simply this- the output goes directly to both field wires on the car harness, ground gets grounded to motor (which has 2 huge ground cables to frame).

ok....heres the progress so far. fixed: misfiring...was a bad pick up in the msd billet dist. timing set at 10 Btdc.... i have to play with it because when its opperating temp and shut off it is a little hard to re-start The run on....it wasnt the timing or carb. It was the electric fan. I have a seperate blade style fuse box. When the fan comes on and you shut the car off the fan stays running and the power backfeeds thru the relay and then the fuse block and powers the msd and will allow the car to run untill out of fuel in the carb....kinda tricky.... charging.....now that the car isnt fighting a pump, bad timing, and a fan it will start every time and not draw more amps than needed... almost fixed: the drivers suspension needs to be aligned to the tire dosent hit the fender go over lights put seatbelts back in. one last once over i feel relieved...just one or two more things to take care of before i can drive it to work and throw stickers on it...

See that? 3-5 years of wrestling with it and all your problems solved in 4 days. Gotta keep a cool head when troublshooting.

One of the first things that I check on electrical problems, especially when symptoms appear to be caused by low voltage...........is a simple amp draw test at the battery positive terminal using a digital multimeter. Check the draw with the key off and no accessories on. Should be 0 amp draw. Actually it could be slightly above zero, but not enough to worry about. Something like .014 amps.

ok....so now that everything else worked itself out . I got to take it to work and inspect and align it. FUN ASS RIDE! 25 miles to work. I left work drove 25 miles home. about 24 miles smooth sailing. the last 2 tenths of a mile i saw a spike in temp and smoke out of the back of the car. then it started to act funny....the trans went . I cant win. It was a used trans that was susposedly rebuilt .....im guessing it wasnt....I guess i know what im doing tomorrow after work. taking the trans out and trying to find a reputable shop to rebuild it

If you want, you can bring that tranny up here Sat and I'll show you how to rebuild it. Depending on what year it is I might even have the rebuild kit here ...
