Any one useing R/T magnums on sb stroker???
« on: August 14, 2008, 09:50:35 PM »

I'm at a cross roads at the moment, I know your supposed to make a plan and stick to it but having second thoughts now.
Was planning on using the Edy magnums(58 cc chamber) so purchased -20 dish diamonds = 10.6:1
After some more research I feel the R/T head would be more bang for the buck, performance wise and in the wallet.
With the pistons already bought and installed in block, my concern is the CR being to high 10.2:1 +/- for a steel head.
Plan on burning premium and some oct booster, is this do able for a street motor or am I just trying to fool myself ??
My #'s may be off a little but close
Any and all input would be appreciated

I have a 408 sb stroker on a 5.9 magnum engine.  I don't have RT magnum heads, but I do have RHS Magnum 360HPST cast heads.  They have 62cc chambers and overall 10.6 or 10.8 CR.  We ran the dyno tests starting with aviation gas then switched to 91 octane premium.  Timing during test varied 33 to 37* and the best combo is set at 35* total.  There was no detonation during tests and now that it is on the road there is no detonation or pinging.  The only problem is that it runs on a little when shutting off hot.  I shut it off with trans in drive 3 and then it stops right away.  So if you run the cast magnum heads, you can get by with premium pump gas.  Good luck with your decision.

I was going to suggest you check out EQ Cylinder head, but I couldn't find a small block Chrysler on their site anymore.  They did make some really nice Mopar heads.  I bought their Vortec heads for my truck and they're real nice for the money.

One of the coolest heads they made was a hybrid Mopar head with Magnum ports and chambers but an LA bolt pattern.  Maybe you'll have better kuck finding them than I did.

I don't see a problem running the magnum heads.  You just need to pay alot of attention to the chamber and piston top.  Make sure you deburr any sharp edges on the piston crown or better yet, tootsie roll them down a bit.  Also, polish the chambers and unshroud the valves a bit.  You'll drop a very small amount of combustion but will burn more efficiently.  With a decent cam that will bring the dynamic CR down a bit, you should be able to run 87 octane.
