port my 346's or buy Stealth Heads?
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:40:35 PM »

Ok I  got a nice set of 346 heads. They have new valve springs and such on them. Am I better off performance wise to buy a set of 440source Stealth heads and just "bolt them on" or would it be better powerwise if I ported and polished my 346 heads. It is a .030 over 440. (I ruined the bearings, so it may become a 493 stroker. )Jason

How are the guides and seats?  Stealths are lighter and have a better chamber.  See what it'll cost to do your heads soup to nuts and see how close it comes to a set of Stealths.

My guides and seats are like brand new.  I had these heads redone when I built my 440. They are stock 346's with the exception of a 3 angle vale job. The engine spun a bearing at 200 mile.( I linked it to too much gasketmaker on the oil pan. it clogged the oil pump.)  So really, my 346 are still new. I would need only to have the port work and polish work done.  I just wondered if the Stealths would perform better out of the box than my ported 346s would. I guess I will have $300-$400 in porting them since all of the other stuff is done.  The Stealths are $899.   If the stealths performed better, I would spend the extra money.  If I spent $899 and they didn't perform as well as 346 heads would have ported, I would only spend the $300-$400.  It isn't the fact I don't want to spend the extra money, I just want to spend the money smartly!! The Stealths are a great buy. I took mine apart and did a little clean up and changed springs.
If you plan to go bigger (stroker), pop for the stealths now. Then when you build your stoker, you
can have them cnc'd and you will pick up the airflow that the larger in. motor needs.
For a couple hundred extra,Id do it now.
Im running a 400/499 with stealth's and I like the combo.

The weight loss alone is a performance increase.

My stealth heads should be here tomorrow. I like the aluminum idea for good compression with pump gas. 89' in a pinch. LOL
