Piston Pin Removal
« on: August 28, 2008, 11:41:39 AM »

I'm gonna have you guys driven nuts with the questions. I appreciate your patience.
I would like to know what is the easiest way to remove/replace wrist pins in automotive engines. Most of the diesels I work on have full floating pins and you just need to remove a cir-clip, and I've never changed press-fit pins before. Does anyone sell a tool for it.

there is a tool for doing that but if you have a press you can do it. large diameter socket on the bottom and just a tad smaller than the pin for the top and press it out.

I do have a press, and thought about that way, but was scared to break the piston. Have you done it this way before?
Do you have to heat the small rod end.??

You heat them to assemble them.  If you don't want to hurt the piston, have a machine shop do it.  There are fixtures and pins for doing it the right way.  Even then, I've marked up a couple of pistons back in the day.

the main reason for it is for school...I'll only change my own once, but we're doing it in school all the time-. I have a new press, and would like to get the proper fixture for doing it. Then I can do mine there...as well as for other people
