Topic: Foam or no Foam?? (Read 445 times)

I'm wrapping up the fuel system on my Demon and the foam on the tank is dried out, I'm afraid it will break apart and clog everything up. Does anyone run without foam? Is this a good idea to leave the foam out or will it cause problems? just need some opinions on which way to go, Thanks, Newbomb

If its a race car, you can run the tank full on every pass, so you won't have much of a fuel slosh problem. I don't think foam is that important on a dedicated race car. $0.02

Yes it is a dedicated race car, I just don't want the fuel to slosh out of the roll over vent, Is the foam available to buy?

just get your vent up high from the cell then down through the floor. i'm kinda thinking worrying about fuel coming out of the roll over vent there has got to be other problems that would need more attention.

foam can be bought seperatly. Foam is supposed to last about 5 years from a good company and can be replaced if `you start seeing any fatigue. im running foam in mine since mines a street/strip car and im running the tank low when i race.

The one I have is only a 5 gal cell, that's why I thought it might be a problem being it was so small. I was thinking maybe a baffle around the fitting, them you don't need the foam??

Id leave it out. On a 5gallon, you can easily fill every run or two.

Run the foam, it works very well to stabilize the fuel in the cell. You can take the old foam out very easy and the new foam is very cheap. I have run the same foam for over 10 years, the trick is keeping the foam covered with fuel when the car sits for more than a few days. I run gas 1/3 of the year and methanol the other 2/3 of the year. Same foam, same fuel filter (mallory). I do change the fuel filter once a month on methanol.
Just my two cents.

I've had 3 cells, all with foam. I didn't have any issues with foam breakdown - and besides, isn't that what a filter is for if a problem does come up?
I personally like the foam, keeps the sloshing down.

Just coil your vent line a couple times and the fuel won't come out.

The Foam is still in the old Dart, I'ts even sat for a while low. Guess they don't make em like they used to. I'm not sure, but if it weren't needed, then the original manufacturer would not have wasted the $s or effort. So I'd vote keep it. Ain't saving weight there. By the way, Got a new block for your ol Dart. Motor geting a bit worn out. Mike
