Odd rust spot on A-pillar (J-body Mopar)
« on: March 10, 2006, 02:11:34 PM »

I am starting on the body of my '83 Imperial and I am a little disappointed with one area.  The rust in the quarters didn't bother me as that is normal for a 20yo+ car.  However, up toward the top of the passenger-side A-pillar between the windsheild trim and the door window trim, there is a small hole rusted in the pillar.  This seems like an odd place to rust.

Can you get to the backside of the pillar if you remove the a-pillar trim on the inside?

I was thinking of "fixing" this with the POR-15 system and patching the hole with their Restogrip filler.  The hole is probably 3/32" diameter.  Its pretty small and doesn't appear to have spread much past the actual hole, but it stuck me as odd that the car would even rust up there.  Any other suggestions?  I really don't have the time or resources to weld in a different pillar and the car isn't worth it either.

Is that the factory seam area, common problem area.  Sounds like a good idea to me just to patch it up.

I'm guessing its close to the seam.  Its right near where the pillar meets the roof panel.

Were cars still leaded in '83?  I know older cars like my '67 Belvedere and '73 Satellite were leaded in the seams, but I figured it was probably replaced by something healthier by '83 with the bad rep lead has had the last few years.

I doubt you can get to the place you need from the inside. I have seen many cars with rust on the A pillars

Good luck on repairing and getting your Imperial back to the beautiful look of new. I have a 1981 with 14,000 miles. It is white with red leather and the only extra cost OPTION a power sun roof

got the wrong picture

I've had the same thing happen, although it was on a 74 Charger. It had a vinyl roof, though; I think that was the main problem...when I peeled it off, a good 3 inch chunk of the pillar came off with it; not good.

I have the same problem on my '69 Dart  im going to attempt fiberglass as I did on the rear window area it's going to be tough because the fiberglass needs something to grip onto so I might need to take out the front windshield which ive never done before  Undecided lemme know if you have any progress    duster
