Wiring Harness question..
« on: September 04, 2008, 01:10:50 PM »

My car is a '89 Bcuda so should be same as dart.  The harness I need help with has a few wires I'm not sure about.

We're talking engine compartment side.

1.  Heavy red wire that has an eyelet on the end.  Also as it runs to firewall, turns into green fuseable link.  (Is this to positive battery or alt?)
2.  Heavy Black that has an eyelet on end. (Negative battery or alt?)

I'm thinking 1 and 2 may be power/ground to instrument panel?

3.  Gray with female spade on end?  (Maybe oil press/water temp warning?)
4.  Purple with boot on end with high temp sleeve.
5.  Brown with black plastic male spade end.  Maybe to windshield wiper motor?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yeah, the brown has a black plastic rectangle with a male spade in it.  Not sure either.

Oh, good.  I'm wondering if I should leave the factory oil pressure sender and water temp sender or just use my new Autometers.

One other thing.  On the heavy red that goes to the starter relay, what is the function?  I have an aftermarket mini starter and a single wire alternator.  Couldn't I just run a big wire from the alt to the battery or do I need to run the big red.  Also can I get rid of the black.  It sounds like I don't need this loom at all.

the red feeds the rest of the car (lights wipres heater etc ) with power.  If you run the alt output to the batt make sure to put a fuse or fusible link on it .... it the diodes in the alt would ever short, that wire would start a fire  explode

Val,
Thanks for the heads up on the alt wire.  If my alt is 100-120 amps, what size fuseable link should I use.
Also,  for the heavy red wire.  Can't I just run it to the positive battery terminal to power the dash?  That would clean things up.

That alt should have a 12 gauge fusible link wire.   you can buy them here http://www.sherco-auto.com/electacc.htm

The red wire also need a fusible link if it does not have one.  I think it is 10 gauge wire so a 14 gauge fusible link wire will do for that one.  You can most definitely connect it to the battery just be sure the fusible link is there
