rear glass installation
« on: September 16, 2008, 09:56:46 AM »

I'd like to get the rear glass in my dart reinstalled over the weekend.

I'm going to stop by the body supp house and pick up the caulk I need this evening after work. I plan on using the original gasket, as it is in great shape. I'm just going to clean it up some. I never even took the gasket off the glass as it seems to have a really good seal.

I imagine I have to put a bead of caulk around the groove in the gasket where it goes over the rear window seam. I'm also guessing I need a bead of caulk around the outter edge of the rear window just below the trim clips. Correct? Anywhere else?

the biggest question I have is how to get the lip of the gasket over the edge of the edge of the window opening. Is this the "rope" process I keep hearing about? If so how does it work?

As always thanks for any info!!

Thanks,

now I am really confused.

The body supply house I deal with only has butyl in that "rope" form. Can't it be bought in a caulk tube type?

If not is that strand type of butyl easy to use? What width do I get? They have 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8

Thanks guys.

Ok that is good. In one of the posts I read it said to stay away from the urethane. But I'll got with what you say Bro. I know they have the 3M urethane for $15 a tube. Yea! Looks like I may be able to drive my car again!!!  Grin

If you use the urethane it will be in there for good. With the gaskets that hold our windshields in place urethane is not a good idea, you will have a hell of a time to remove the glass and you will destroy the gasket.
You should use butyl that is in a caulking tube which will cost less than $8. The butyl will never get hard and remain flexible through out its life.
The caulking that you want is made my CR Laurence, part #CRL7708. One tube will do front and back, and if not spend another $8.

Good idea, it can be messy. It's not to bad to remove if you use varsol or similar products.
Just tape off and be very careful when applying the butyl.

Am I missing something? I bought a new gasket and *roped* my window in without any sealant at all. I used tire mounting solution and clothesline rope. It took 3 of us 10 minutes to do.

I don't leave it outside much but last time i washed it no water came in. I did redo all my window jams and had them painted before i put the new rubber and window back in.
