Thinking of buying a Tundra.
« on: September 17, 2008, 12:14:35 PM »

I am thinking about buying a Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L engine. I have never bought a foreign car before, what do you think of this truck. I have a Ram 1500 now, but I can't afford a new 2009, and the 2008 down Ram just dont tickle my nuts anymore, even with a HEMI.   Huh

I wouldn't do it, but then again I'm not going to be buying any new vehicles any time soon.

My wife had an 03 4x4 when I met her, it was a very nice truck, nice riding, handling, power ect..  Its hard to go with brand loyalty when vehicles cost 30-50 grand. You have to go with the best value.

I don't peronally know much about Tundras, but I buy a lot of vehicles and I'll never buy another new one for personal use from anyone again. Buy a year old lease return if you want a "new" one. Best bang for your buck. Have financing set up before you go looking and it will give you a lot of buying clout when all you have to do is write a check. Good luck with whatever you buy.

 agree

In 1991 I bought a used 4Runner w/25k and drove it to 275k and it still had the original clutch!  Sold that and got a '97 4Runner w/10k and sold it w/200k, not one problem.  I currently have a Tacoma Xtra Cab TRD that I might drive once a month...never misses a beat.
Great product, you can't go wrong
I personally don't care where anything I like comes from, if it is reliable and good value...Toyota is just that

The one thing I do not care for in Japanese vehicles is the body steel....

It is weaker than snot. Bumpers are made of paper mache'.

I've owned Nissan and Toyota, cars and trucks. I use them for work. Total shyt. Could take a hit.

I then bought a new Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4X4 back in 1991. Still have it. 300K Miles on the odo.

Best vehicle I have ever owned. And I beat the crap out of it.

I've driven it into Cement Quarries, towing 65KW gensets..in the rain. Didn't skip a beat.

Went form 127F temp in Mojave to 14F at Tioga pass in one day trip...engine temp never wavered.

Just my opinion..

some oyoatas are more american made than any of the big 3. i cant imagine seeing toyoats apulling on job sites but if they ever do make a HD truck i guess it could go either way, no one would buy them or they would really burry the american car companies. i really dont like 1/2 ton trucks. as for toyota trucks, as far as i know they are pretty damn good. my bro had an 85 it was a rare truck, only one year of the solid front axle and efi it had an 8' bed too. the truck was a tank. i was very surprised.  my uncle wa s atoyota tech for many years and he had very bad things to say about the t100s when they first came out, but my nieghbor has one, it is one of the first years its got 197,000 on it. doesnt burn or leak a drop. i put 2 exhaust systems on it, rear springs, shocks the only major problem he had, the flexplate cracked on it. he plows his rental houses and carries shit on a reciever rack o nthe back at the same time. its taken care of but well used.  it is a great truck.

agree I also agree and I am as hard-core "buy north american cars" as anyone else, and I work for GM.

I'd still sooner drive an old Mopar or Ford, but if I HAD to buy a new car it would either be a GM because I would get a good discount, or Toyota because they're actually good vehicles.

I should clarify, I would never buy a new vehicle either, I am looking at a 2007 or 2008 Tundra with the badass engine. I have had a 2003 and currently have 2005 ram, its just ok.

I would be ashamed to be seen in a foreign vehicle, car or truck.
My 1990 Dodge W250 4X4 has 200K on it, and still runs and looks like new. When I bought it new, everyone told me I bought the biggest POS of a truck ever made. All their trucks came and went, but Ram Force One is still here.
My .02 for what it's worth.

Just into giving up towing power, bed capacity, and fuel economy?

I'd say a 6.1 into that 5.7 truck even with the stock heads and all should do the trick.

I don't know about you, but around me the new '08 Hemi/4.7 trucks are lined up at less than Dakota V6s with all the amenities. Probably what you'd pay for a used Toyota truck.

Yes, I do, the 2003 I had was a hemi, the 2005 is a v-6.

I actually started out by going to the Toyota dealer to buy a used 2005 hemi ram, but they sold it before I got there. So I started looking at the Tundras, they are really nice trucks. Seem to be built better than the Rams too. I am still undecided, to me, buying foreign is like moving to Canada and studying politics and economics under Dono's teachings. It just feels wrong.

I've always owned American cars except for a "phase" I went through in my "corporate exec" years where I just HAD TO be seen in a Mercedes.   I've literally bought a FEW THOUSAND fleet vehicles in the last 25 years, including Fords, Chevs, Dodges and hundreds of Toyotas.

Personally, my loyalty is with Chrysler products.   I've had great experiences with them and won't buy anything else.  Professionally, I've had the best experience with Ford products as fleet vehicles.   All that said, I have found that ALL vehicle makes have their good traits and their problems.   Every manufacturer's product lines can have good years and bad years, or, bad partial runs within a generally good production year.   In my view, having had hundreds of Toyotas at a time, they're no better than a Chevy (the 5.7 in the Tundras are known for breaking cams in certain years).

In general, and specifically during these bad economic times, I think we as Americans OWE IT to ourselves and our country to buy American made products as much as possible, whenever possible.   (I know that's getting harder to do...my Hemis were made in Mexico.)   Sure, the American manufacturers got complacent with quality control in the seventies, into the eighties, but they've turned things around and on average, produce vehicles as good as any foreign vehicle.   Buying a Japanese car because there may be a little better bang for the buck is selfish and self defeating for America in the long run.  BUY AMERICAN!

Just saw a TV commercial where Chrysler is selling NEW Rams at 40% off MSRP, through the end of September.   Sounds like a DEAL to me!

I have nothing against Canada, I practically grew up there living a mile from Windsor. But I am an American, so abandoning my country is bad. For an American to move to another country feels unpatriotic. As far as Dono, he just gets under my skin because he is constantly bashing the US, every morning I see a new thread by him. Thats get under my skin. SO that was the comparison I was making, not Canada being bad.

I was buying Dodges when they were owned by a German company, so is buying a Topyota built in the US so bad? I'm not sure, not decided yet.

I always used to say, "Buy American!".  Then when I bought american cars, I ended up with quite a few problems.  Most items available on the market today are made overseas anyway.

As with anything else, how do you decide on your purchase?  We all look at consumer reports, reliability data, satisfaction surveys.  You go with the best you can afford. . .right?  For me it's always been Sony or Toshiba TV's. (Tube of course).  It should be the same for cars.  The money you have was worked hard for and you deserve a quality product.  It's a global market and I refuse to buy junk because it says, "Made in the USA" on it.  Don't feel guilty, go with the best.

How about the Toyota Truck (Tacoma?) that has such a problem with rot on the chassis, that Toyota will buy any Tacoma back that shows any sign of rust due to the fact that so many trucks have rotted to the point that the chassis fails, and the occupants and surrounding drivers have been killed.
I wonder why the media isn't shoving this down our throats on the 6PM news every day? Maybe, Just Maybe, the left wing media hates the "Big Three" so much, that they supress reporting it over and over like they would if say GM had a recall involving tail lights.
Piece a S*&T if you ask me. I'll put my 18 year old, 200,000 mile Dodge up against any of the new foreign trucks anyday.
I personally wouldn't take one of those things for free.

The left in this country hates ANY big business, you know that. Foreign businesses get a free pass. The media is part of the left wing.
There isn't a foreign vehicle made that I would consider to be worthy enough to be parked in my driveway. If you own a foreign vehicle, you're more than welcome to stop by here for a beer, but please, park in the street.
