Ram Overcharging !!!!
« on: September 19, 2008, 10:59:51 PM »

Help !
I took my 85' W250 360 / auto 4x4 out to get my trailer tonight and noticed my charge guage was way over on the charge side. When I got there , I noticed the battery was overheated . I checked the voltage across the battery and it was as high as 17 volts ! I pulled the field wire and headed home (without the trailer )and tried another couple of regulators , no change . I also found the center wire connector on the voltage reg  connector was screwed , replaced it too , no difference . Guess it`s my 105 Amp alternator ? Anybody have this happen ?

Do the 85's still use the ammeter? I had an ammeter go bad on me that acted like what you described.

It does have an ammeter . But how would that boil the battery and cause the high output voltage?

OK , I had to pull the larger guage field wire off to get home without blowing the battery.
 I`ll check

Couldn't really tell you why, but it goes into a massive overcharge state. I had replaced every bit of the charging system trying to fix it, to no avail. Finally ran into an older mechanic that had heard of it. I never would have figured that a gauge would contribute to a problem like that.

Yep....sounds like one of the field terminals went to ground in the alternator.
