i going to install my headliner and i bought headliner glue from some idiot on ebay, i paid over 2 weeks ago and the ass hasnt sent it and is not replying to my emails. i dont know how he got such a high rating, is there a glue that you can buy at a local hardware store or some place that would carry a glue you can use to install a headliner? i could swear it is just contact cement but i really just want to do this job once and be done with it.

You want to use Permatex Body Shop Heavy Duty Headliner & Carpet Adhesive #27828 or a similar product for the material. Since you are cheap (may I call yo cheap) like me, save your self the $400. Install the roof insulation first with the glue. With the bows installed in the headliner and in position start at the rear, apply some glue along the rear body and headliner. When it is time to install hook the head liner into the little pricks on the body so that there are no wrinkles side to side. During this whole process I use a bunch of little plastic clamps to keep the headliner in place and allow the glue time to dry. When the rear is installed attach the front of the headliner into the little pricks of the body using the gluing process. Make sure before you attach to the pricks that the bows are as straight as possible. Ensure no wrinkles side to side at the front. Again using the clamps to secure for a while. When you are ready to do the sides glue and attach the headliner to the body. This is were you really need the clamps to hold the liner in place. Ensure no wrinkles along the sides. You want to pull the liner some what so that it is nice and taught. The upper trim will help keep the liner in place. Now do the other side of the car the same way as the first side you just did, keeping the liner material nice and taught for a nice look. Doing this by your self does take time so be patient to ensure a good job. If the front and rear glass are out it it easier to do. Trim off any excess liner material for a neat install. You will have saved yourself $400 to spend towards a converter or carb or what ever you may need for your . If you have any wrinkles after the install people say use steam to get rid of them, I have not tried this, so be careful if you do use the steam. Hopefully you will have no wrinkles. I did mine and it came out great while saving a bunch of money (read cheap, just like you). Hope this helps you. By the way my car is a 69 just like yours so the process is the same as described . gt

you don't have to worry all that much about the wrinkles, just get it as smooth as posible as them will come out by themselves in about a week. i installed a few of them and never used clue except where there was an extra panel at the "c" pillar. one of them plastic bondo spreaders helps getting it on the pricks, just make sure the edge isn't too sharp.

yeah im a cheap MF. thanks for the info guys. i cant wait to do it but this jerk off i bought the glue fro mis really pissing me off. it would be cool if some one lived by him and could knock on his door and just politely ask for my glue. ill have to check and see if the permatex stuff is available locally. when you say its easier with the glass out, are you saying its possible to do with the glass in? my bro is being lazy wants a headliner i nhis barracuda but wont remove the glass. mine is out and waiting for the headliner.

I only put my own headliner in and the glass was out. So I can't really comment on the difficulty when the glass is in. bOb said he did a few so he may know for sure. Good luck with it though.

I'd be REALLY interested in knowing the ease of headliner installation with and without the glass in the car also. I'm going to be doing a new headliner in my Coronet and was planning to remove and replace the front windshield, but was not planning on taking out the rear window glass, so I'll be watching this thread closely for information.

Anyone use a sound deadener on the roof before installing a headliner or is it pointless?
Thanks

i got my headliner in today, i just have to finish working on the sail panel areas, ran out of time. i put this foil faced foam insulation on the roof before doing the headliner. i didnt want ot spend the cash on dynamat or the knock offs. plus im not really into the fact that you really cant remove it. i bought a huge roll of this stuff for 130 bucks. id say its easily enough to do 2 complete interiors. they claim it is better than dynamat in every aspect plus its much lighter. well see. i know its better than nothing.

getting ready to start this my self , I was hoping to get the headliner before I had the glass put in, but it didnt come in and I needed to get hte glass back in. it doesnt look like it will be that much more of bitch to do with the glass in. I will post some picks as I go.
I actually have my roof bottom covered in dynamat, been that way for a year or so. makes a big difference in sound and vibrations from the roof.

Thanks for the pictures - after you glued down the sides what finishes it so you don't have the edges of the headliner showing?

You've got your a-pillar mouldings (plastic), then a metal channel that goes over the pinch weld there at the roof, then the large metal trim that surrounds the rear side windows. The roof rail weatherstrip channels also hide some of it. The screw holes for the weatherstrip channel are visible in the pics.

Thank you from me also for the pictures Duster440. I'm going to use the RAMmat on the floor pans, roof and in the doors on my Coronet. Not only is it a sound deadner, it is also a good heat shield, so on our older cars with big blocks and larger exhaust systems that put out LOTS of heat to the floor pans, that RAMmat will be really appreciated.
