Topic: Grille repair - Baking soda and super glue? (Read 405 times)

I finally got my hands on a sharktooth grille.  But it has a couple cracks. The cracks ARE in areas that affect the strength of the part. No worries, I'll make it work. A couple possiblities for repair: plastic welding or baking soda and super glue. I was leaning toward the superglue trick because I've seen it recommended here before. I'm sure the baking soda and super glue will make a nice filler that I can sand and paint. But is it relatively strong? I have an old "standard" grille that's all busted up that I could use for plasic welding. Anybody have experience - good or bad - with that? Mark |

I have used a product called Q-bond that is amzingly strong. It has a powder activator/filler and has not failed on any repair yet. Not cheap though.

Try J-B weld, that works great and is very strong.

you have to figure out the type of plastic you have before you can fix it. my guess it is ABS. but guessing ... maybe they put the plastic identification near the part# on the back somewere like they do nowadays.look around for it. anyways we use 2 types of repair material,both are 2 part mixes and need an expensive gun to empty them and a special mixing nozzle. it will probably cost you over 100 bucks just to start. and around 150-200 to get a pro to do it. but you won't learn anything that way. if the plastic is ABS then we would use a 3M or similiar from Kent. Super or Crazy glues are too brittle and just snap,good enough if you just want to flip it on to some stranger.  take care |

Ive used JB Weld in the past for small breaks and the like. works well, is cheap and readily available almost everywhere. works especially well if youre planning on painting the part anyway

the gun/dispenser is expensive,almost 250bucks for the 3M tubes,the product is about 35 bucks.
a die grinder and a small straight burr will make quick work of preparing the area and finishing the repair.
the whole repair method is really a hands on thing,a picture of exactly what you are doing would help a lot in explaining the repair method to use.

Use the baking soda and crazy glue you won't be disapointed it's the best!! Anything that I have to glue is done with baking soda and crazy glue .I have used it on everything from fine figurines that accidently got broke to parts on my four wheelers and cars .My brother inlaw was always skeptical he broke the tab off the top alt bolt on his camaro got his wife to put tension on the belt with a bar .He then give it a few applications of the crazy glue and baking soda it was still there 1 year later when he sold the car.I know a guy who used it to repair the prop on his ultralite.I just use the stuff from the dollar store as long as it is acrilisyanate (spelling) glue it will work. Practice with a few junk pieces so that you can get a technique that works for you .I like to take the time to get it to fit the way I want it to .I run the glue along one piece then fit it together then sprinkle on some baking soda....DONE ! Make sure it is where you want it as it wont be moving once you put on the baking soda.It is buildable,fileable,shapable and strong .Just give it a try it's really dirt cheap to try all you have to lose is a few scrap pieces ,it will work and I'm sure you will be happy with the results .JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T GET IT ON ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT GLUED!!!! Like your finger together or to your grill or your leg or your car or your dog............  |

Mark , In your cracked areas just V it out some you can build this stuff up a little CG then some BS little more CG sprinkle on some more BS .Like I said practice on a old peice first so that you know how it works and it will give you a idea as to how you want to do it.

JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T GET IT ON ANYTHING YOU DON'T WANT GLUED!!!! Like your finger together or to your grill or your leg or your car or your dog............ It is essential for a long life and good health that you DO NOT glue your girlfriend to any part of your body either.......Wives do not find that funny when that happens!  |
