Drag Race suspension set-up
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:34:00 AM »

What is everyone running for a rear set up on their cars? I am trying to decide if I should go Cal-Tracs or Super Stock. I still drive this car on the street and race it. I am trying to get my 60ft times down, I ran 7.40 at 92 miles an hour 60ft 1.65-1.68 I know it can be in 1.50 just dont know what my next move should be. The rear is set up right from Chryslers chassis book but I also used old leaf springs.
Any help would be appreciated.

going to ss springs will be about $600-$800 cheaper then going to cowtracks. try a good 12 way adjustable shock on each corner.

If money is tight and you still drive it on the street go with the Chrysler S/S
spring (about $225).  If you can afford the Caltracs they will improve your
60ft times over the S/S springs but cost about $600 +.

Their (caltracs) shocks are good and worth the $$.

With the S/S springs when you launch the car will have a tendency to lift
the left front tire over the right.  With the caltracs it should lift even on the
front end.

which SS springs do you guys recommend for the a-bodies....Ive been looking into them too, but Im not sure about what my car weighs, so would it be better to go for the ones that are for the lighter cars or heavier ones if you arent sure?

honestly, my opinion is put the effort into getting it weighed and let that guide you.  a guess is just that....a guess.   facts are worth their weight.

Ive tried a few things on mine.   Stuck with the SS springs (002/003) models  .  Ive tried a few of  the shocks except the fancy 12 ways.  I just recently put  90's  Ram 3/4 ton  truck shocks on it.

My car 60'  the same with   truck shocks ,  MP drag shocks / CE 3-way drag shocks .         throw money

Also try clamping your springs  .

go to   carpetperfect.com   for info on clamps

That must mean the ss are too stiff, if different shocks have no effect.
Crap, I have a 4 link and 3200# ss in my duster; If I ever get it off the jackstands, I foresee taking them out, installing coil overs and a diag link.
poop.

OK, maybe I'm uninformered, but I thought if you had a 4 link, you eliminated the springs and just had
the 4 link bars, shocks and maybe a trailing bar.

I just put Caltracs whole set up in my 69 and it rides great i love the springs, the S/S are alittle to stiff for my liking. Havent got to the track yet just got it in right before i went to Iraq. But the car is alittle more predictable when laying down black marks on the street.

So I went to the Caltracs website and it says that the assembly is only $339.00 (plus tax + shipping). Seems pretty reasonable to me. Could someone explain to me where the $600-800 pricetags are coming from? Does that include acquiring SS springs, a quality shock set, clamps and new U-bolts,  or.........what?  Do they work well with the SS springs or is it just redundancy?

Thats probably just the cost of the cal-trac bars.  You also have the buy springs and shocks.

I am in the same boat with my 63 street car.  I have run 7.33 at 93 in the 1/8 on my 11.52 pass and thats on the original springs with air shocks !   As you can see it lifts the left front wheel only.  I need to go with either the SS springs or the Caltracs.   From what I have seen the Caltracs will get the best 60's when set up right but I drive on the street all the time and I feel I can get good 60's with the SS springs so I will most likely go that way.   I have actually pulled a 1.58 best 60 but I average in the low 1.60's.   Ron

I personal like the S/S springs 002/003. I had know problems coming off the line with them. The car never would spin the tires off the line. We only ran 12.15@110 mph.
