I live in a pretty rural area on the one main street that goes through town. It's a busy street with a lot of traffic. I see all kinds of old cars and bikes go by.
Well yesterday afternoon I was washing the Satellite and about a mile away I hear a Harley really getting on the throttle. I see him as he goes by my house, passing cars in the breakdown lane doing about 80mph and he's not wearing a helmet. It actually scared my girlfriends grandson in the house. After he goes by I don't hear the bike anymore. I walk over to the street and I see some cars stopped at the bend in the road. I suspect something wrong. As I walk back in the yard I all of a sudden hear sirens. I told my girlfriend that I think the guy lost it on the bend and I hop in the car to check it out.
There were no skid marks so he didn't try to hit the brakes. He went into the grass and the tracks come about a foot away from the first telephone pole, then crosses a side street and completely sheers off a fire hydrant and launches it 50 ft away into someones yard and still hits another pole about 75 feet after that and gets launched in the woods.
He was in bad shape. The bike was a mess. Don't know if he is going to make it. One of his buddies show up so I asked him if he always rides like a nut. He said we all do from time to time but I said you don't want it to be the last time.
Whew, what a mess. It's guys like that that give a bad name to the responsible riders.

We had our annual "ride For The Cure" this past weekend....in aid of breast cancer. A local bike dealer gathers up as many bikes as he can to ride the "Cabot Trail". It's about a 6 hour trip(or longer) depending on traffic. This year ,there were 750 bikes. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but I got to watch them leave. It was quite a sight. Then we noticed the log-jam near an on-ramp. Seems a furniture truck cut someone off, and he went down. All I could do was hope there were no others....but after talking to a buddy of mine who participated, at least two others went down moving, and himself and at least two others went down while not moving. Two years ago, a guy lost a leg when he clipped a guard rail on his crotch-rocket.As you know-only takes one idiot to make a bad name for everyone.

Here on Long Island we have a highway called the Southern State Parkway. Every couple of miles you see a monument of wreaths and flowers on the side of the road. There are shitloads of crazy crotchrocket idiots riding like absolute maniacs and getting killed almost every week. I just shake my head.

They all think they're invincible. I live in a suburb of Milwaukee. There are Harley riders EVERYWHERE. There are not as many crotch rocket guys.
Just to generalize, Harley riders ride slower, but may not always have a real command of the bike. You see them stop quickly and the bike gets all squirrely on them. They're looking at the ground, not looking ahead. They come to a stop with both feet out like Fred Flintstone. A little unpolished maybe, but not scary.
But a lot of the crotch rocket guys are f-ing insane. I saw a guy weaving in and out of traffic last week using the space between two side-by-side cars to ride in. The cars were probably going about 60 in rush hour traffic. I don't care how "good" he is as a rider, one car that makes a sudden move ends this guy's life. Most of these guys wear tennis shoes, shorts and a t-shirt too. No helmet.
They don't realize how thin the margin is that they're playing with. On a bike, you need to be more aware, more defensive.
At least this guy didn't hurt anyone else.

I think it is a shame that this guy got hurt and I agree that a lot of people ride way faster that they should but as a general rule. I don't think bike riders are any worse the car drivers. You may notice the insane way out of control guys on crotchrockets but there are way more people in cars doing their daily commute puting on makeup talking on the cell that do way stupid things every day around here. Do any of you remember Nick Hogan and Doug Herberts son? I think everyone operates their vehicles irresponsibly anymore.

but there is no protection on the bike. Stupid drivers usually live to drive another day.
