Help before I make a mistake with my trunk lid
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:34:04 PM »

My Trunk lid is off the car and I'm getting ready to strip and repaint it.  The problem is that inside the two layer of sheet metal is rusty, in fact when I move it I hear it flaking off and rattling around.

So I formulated a Plan (this is where the possible problem comes into play).

The Plan:   Invert the trunk Lid in a homemade pool, filled with EVAPO-RUST.  I think that will get rid of the rust but......now, how do I cover the metal with Paint.

Part two:  buy a gallon of Rustoleum, rusty metal primer - This is only about $25, better paint is more like $125 to $300 a gallon
Pour it in and move the trunk lid back and forth, up & down.

Not pretty but I can't think of anything else I can do at home and afford.

I am open to any suggestions ...Please help

You could go to www.eastwood.com. They have some good rust comverters. I used there painton rust converter on my car. Just clean the rust and paint it on..they also have RC in aerosol cans. Take a look, hope it will help.

That is extremely generous.  If your serious and it's not to much of an imposition I'll take you up on that offer.  I've been meaning to call you about the gas tank strap holders anyway.  I was hoping to arrange a time to come visit and take measurements.

Thanks that's awesome.

NICE!  drinks  I was going to suggest some Eastwood rust encapsulator, but the acid bath is even better. Still put some paint in there though.

My trunk lid rattles like crazy. I'm going to somehow get some body caulk in between the two pieces, I just haven't figured out how!

The Evaporust will work well and get rid of all the rust, but you would need a lot! At $80 for 5 gal, it would take at least 2 pails. You can bulid a pool out of 2x6 and some heavy plastic, lay the trunk lid in it, then pour the evaporust in (you will have to do the bottom edge seperately). Let it sit for a few days and it will be rust free. I have pictures of the stuff, its amazing, no acid or toxic chems left over, as a matter of fact, if you dont rinse it out, it will dry to a sticky film that will protect the metal.
