how to run bit faster??
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:07:52 PM »

hi guys....i have a BIG 1968 monaco 500(4400 with me in it) with a 383....i have 3.91 locker rear  and 26's tires.....the engine is not stock but its not a top fuel monster neither.....need to adjust the carb and need a new fuel pump...the trans is rebuilt with a transkit from b&m and a 2500 torque stall....but ive tried it at the track......on the 1/8 mile my best run is 9.49 ....and like 2.28 best 60'..not bad for a 4400 pound whale.....but...what can i do to go down a bit....my plan is to run about 9.00 - 9.10....a bit closer to the sportsman categorie....im planning to put a manual valve body...holley blue pump....and a 4.30 rear gear...to help the ''out of the box'' thing....what do you guys think about that???

A 1 inch 4 hole carb spacer might help.

My friend has a 1966 monaco and he used to take off the hood. I would run a vacuum secondary carb with that heavy car.

If you run the 1/8th mile, some 5.38s should do the trick. Need more info on the motor, fix the carb and fuel pump.

1) do you have good headers and a full 3 inch exhaust with X pipe?
2) Do you have a performer RPM or a performer with 1 inch open spacer with the EGR port blocked off?
3) A big TQ or a large vacc secondary holley?
4) A full port job on the heads, or better still some good flowing AL heads?
5) a good NOS system?
6) A cam with around 245 duration @ .050?

Lose weight, or go with as much gear possible. Or both. I raced a 69 Gran Coupe in the late 70s in Denver. I couldn't beat many Cameros, but beat a lot of cars I shouldn't have. It was respectable. I had a 383, 4.56 gears, Street Dominator, Holly 650 Vac, stock dual exhaust. I scrapped all I could from the car. Got it down to 4000 # without me in it. A lot ov Chevie boys thought it was a 440.

Take off the doors, trunk, and hood.  Grin (or not...)

I'd say first to take apart the interior trim, then take out the backseat, if it has buckets use just one, take off the exterior trim, the hood coming off may be a good suggestion as long as it's prepped right (should be...)

Ever heard of a 383 dual quad intake? (stock piece) This could be worth a bit of power plus a pair of nice carbs. Either that or an alum intake if you don't have one.

If I remember correctly, my front bucket seats in the Gran Coupe were like 75 # each. They were power buckets. I bought 2  plastic racing seats. Like 5 # each. The carpeting, hood insulation, wheels, intake manifold, and anything that wasn't needed were replaced adding up the pounds. Every 100 pounds is a tenth or better in the quarter mile. In a quarter mile, at 100 mph, a tenth is a car-length. That's a bunch...........
