LED Light Conversion
« on: September 26, 2008, 06:42:26 AM »

I have officially converted all of my lamps in my Dart Sport, to LED versions.  I have the green LEDs in the instrument cluster to match the green LED backlit Autometer NV gauges.  I have amber and red LED's in the side marker lamps, and the amber LED 1157's in the park/turn lamps in the front with red LED 1157's in the tail lamps.  The only non-LED lights on the car are the dome light, rear license plate light and the headlights.

I bought the LED's and electronic LED flashers from V-LEDS.com.  The high-intensity surface mount LED's are the ones to get.  They are killer bright and diffuse the light in all directions just like the original lamps.

If you buy the electronic flashers, the one for the turn signals, needs to have the leads reversed for correct polarity.  I took the flasher apart and switched the terminals and re-assembled.  The hazzard flasher was OK as it was.

The only high-draw items on my entire electrical system are:  Headlights (sylvania silverstar halogen) and electric fuel pump.  No radio, heater disconnected.  Wipers are still hooked up though.

I also have LEDs in my car, and I sell them at swap meet and small shows. What did you end up paying for them? I have never had to change polarity on the flasher. The electronic flashers have always worked right out of the box. Did need to get two though,as my emergency flashers did not work without it. They are cool though, have a different look to them.

I've seen LED dome lights available somewhere.

Are your headlights on a relay?  If they aren't, change that and see what you're missing.

All said and done I have about $65.00 in the entire conversion.  I bought 2 identical 2 blade flasher relays, but for some reason the polarity had to be reversed on the one before my signals would flash.  Otherwise they just stayed on solid.  The other relay for the 4-ways worked out of the box.  Could have been assembled incorrectly I suppose.

I will move the headlights off onto relays over the winter.  Planning on rewiring the engine side of the harness anyway.  Going to remove unnecessary wiring and beef up what's left.

If you find the LED dome lights, could you let me know where??  I've been looking for them and haven't been able to find them anywhere.  Tons of GM and ford bulbs available.

I finally found an interior bulb that should work on the Dart's interior light fixture.

Looks cool. Does the dimmer still work for the instrument cluster lighting?

Yep.....everything still works as it did before with the exception of the flashers:  They flash at a constant rate regardless of battery voltage, engine RPM, etc.

I've converted the license plate lamp to green LED to match the dash lamps......looks cool.  Hell of a lot brighter too.  I only have the interior lamp to order yet and I'll be done with the entire conversion.

Here is a short video showing the 4-way flashers in action with the LED lamps.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujwSwgOav4A

can I purchase these for my '68?  I tried the LED's that looked like an 1157 body with a dozen or so diodes, but the brightness factor wasn't what I was looking for so I went back to the old technology.  Yours look much clearer and brighter, I would like to buy the entire package if possible.
PM me or give me a call @ (360)223-9297
Thx, John

Part #:  194_11_SMT_A  $12.99 per pair  Amber side marker
Part #:  194_11_SMT_R  $12.99 per pair  Red side marker

The 2 LED flashers that you need are the Part # EFL2 V-LED.com for $16.59 each.  One for Hazzards and one for turn signals.  You will have to reverse the polarity for the turn signals on one of the relays.

All said and done total cost would be somewhere around $140.00 if you purchase from V-LED.com website.  I purchased everything but the flashers from Ebay auctions so I was able to save about half of this cost.
